Charly suggested stainless steel hose clamps, as an easy way to keep large chunks of wire rope from fraying while being chop-saw’d.
This is version 2.0 of Jazzlet’s Eye Gouger, now with a much shorter blade for better leverage, and a thicker back for prying out recalcitrant spud-chunks.

I get most of my woods and stock from Ebay. Back when I lived in Maryland, there was a craft-woods store but, up here, I live in the middle of miles of the stuff.
Complaining and being audibly unhappy sometimes works wonders.
There’s a smith on instagram who does these lovely scandinavian-style carving knives; it inspired me to try my own hand at a few.
