As expected [stderr] the wars in Syria and Iraq have devolved into a horror show of human tragedy. And, to exacerbate it, you’ve got America’s fondness for saturation bombing civilians with high explosive.
Lately, I’ve been thinking of wrapped handles – especially after seeing some of the beautiful work kestrel does, and some of the Japanese-style wrappings on Michael Bell’s sword mountings. What’s something tough, beautiful, interesting, weather-proof?
Recent discussion about pickling and canning [stderr] reminded me that it’s time to more closely research the history of the technique. In its time, it was a tremendously important military technology.

This has become a theme of mine: who knows what, and when.
Pickled beets are ridiculously easy to make, they just require a bit of time. They’re a perfect project for a sunday morning (since you don’t waste time in church!) or a rainy day.
My father used to say that the history of a time can’t be written until all the bodies are buried. There’s definitely something to that, and the little bits that do peek out often reveal the shape of an underlying mass of buried secrets. It’s enough to turn you into a conspiracy theorist.
Since 2004 or so, I’ve done a column over at SearchSecurity [ss] which started out as me doing a point/counterpoint with Bruce Schneier and ended with me interviewing interesting people from all over the field. I’m stopping doing the column, finally, this fall, due to “internet security fatigue” triggered by decades of saying the same thing.
