These are old photos – from 2005. The dogs and I were on a walk and suddenly they got very interested in this patch of mud on the trail. It took some doing to get them to not stomp all over it, so I could go back to the house and get a camera and a ruler.

Fireflies

The Firefly Festival never happened, mostly because the fireflies respect no one’s schedule – some night in June and, wham! Fireflies. I wanted to host a dinner out in the grass with them, but it’s impossible to get guests to commit to show up on some random evening in June.

Instinct

We are often told we have “instincts” – behaviors that are wired into us through evolution and time. These instincts are different from operational functions like peristalsis (the rythmic clenching of our intestines) and … well, where’s the line? We’d like to think that walking is, maybe, an instinctive behavior but – has anyone who believes that ever had a baby? Is eating an instinctive behavior? Has anyone who believes that ever cleaned baby-projected food off the ceiling? It appears that there is a lot more learning going on than instinct.
