Speaking of Immortal Souls

Cardinal Pell has been charged with sex offenses. [bbc]

He is currently staying in Rome, at the Vatican, where “good guy” pope Francis has not accepted Pell’s resignation, in spite of his pro forma offer upon reaching age 75. [catholicherald] “Good guy” pope Francis appears to be helping Pell run out the clock in safety, because he’s concerned with the souls of his flock. Or something. Of course it’s a disgrace, but remember: this is the catholic church that occasionally claims that they are the moral compass for billions of souls. Obviously Francis has never read Kant.

In April, Pope Francis visited the Secretariat for the Economy, with the cardinal’s office subsequently releasing a statement saying he would “be continuing with his current role for the full five-year term”.

“The Holy Father said he fully supported (the Secretariat’s) work and re-emphasized the ongoing need for transparency in continuing with their reforms,” the statement added.

After giving evidence to Australia’s royal commission on child abuse in March, Cardinal Pell said he would only resign if Pope Francis asked him to. [catholicherald]

As Skukkuk the Kif would say, “I would spit him from my mouth” (a big insult for a blood-loving carnivore) and so we know the pope is complicit: he loves power and protecting his religious racket more than what’s right. The holy godfather! I would insert an animation of Gomer Pyle saying “surprise, surprise, surprise” but I’m not even that surprised.

It’s nice that the Australians have moved against Pell; it just shows that another country has realized a little bit more what a nest of hornets they have been sheltering.

Representatives for the Catholic Church in Australia did not immediately return a request for comment.

OK, now I’ll say it, “surprise, surprise, surprise.”

I’m willing to say that pope Francis and cardinal Pell are athier than I am – clearly they don’t believe in all that sin and damnation stuff. If they thought they had a vengeful sin-hating god watching over their actions, they wouldn’t act this way, unless they thought their god was in on it, too. Perhaps they really worship Sithrak.[oglaf]

Let’s give Tim Minchin the last word:

------ divider ------One of the most loathesome tricks is when a scoundrel runs out the clock and gets to die, peacefully in bed. Why do humans allow that so often? His actions scream guilt for all to hear.

They’re Catholics. One of the core doctrines of Catholicism is that any sin can be forgiven if you perform the appropriate rituals.

I’m informed by many Catholics that this is just one big conspiracy. These people are moral degenerates.

They’d have to include the pope, then, since he appears to be sheltering Pell.
Not that popes aren’t moral degenerates. Alexander VI was pretty notably degenerate even for a pope.

Or Pell is Francis’ hatchman in the financial area and he wants to hold onto him until he, Francis, can find a replacement?

From what I have read about Pell over the last few years he is a very objectionable man in many ways though I had not heard of the abuse accusations but just the ruthless sob to do some cleaning up of Vatican finances.

As I understand it, the Vatican finances makes US military accounting look transparent and someone like Pell, assuming even moderate honesty, is the type you want to go in with a battle axe or machine gun (flame-thrower?)and do some tidying up.

Clicking the vid arrow above made it play – without audio.

Clicking the link in that window opened a YouTube tab in which the same vid played, with sound (seems better that way), which maybe exonerates the hardware & settings on my end.

jrkrideau @ # 7 – lots of eyebrows got raised when Bergoglio picked a man best known for decades of covering up criminal activity to “clean up” the Vatican Bank’s rather maculate operations.

Then instead of “moderate honesty” wouldn’t they want a horrible ruthless corrupt amoral bastard?

    Like Pell.
