Common gallinule

It’s been a bit since I posted anything here, three and a half years, in fact. I’ve already explained the reasons, so I won’t reiterate them. Since then, I’ve been hired permanently, passed my probationary period, fired, rehired, passed my probationary period again (long story), and furloughed (which is my current status). I’ve also rekindled an old hobby, outdoor photography, this time focusing on wildlife, mainly birds.

This video is from a trip to Orlando, where I was scheduled to speak at the American Society for Microbiology symposium “Early Microbial Life: Our Past, Present, and Future“. I drove down from Alexandria, stopping in Atlanta for a while, and arrived a few days early to do some birding. Unfortunately, after two days in Orlando, a scratchy throat prompted me to buy a COVID test, which was positive. I warned the hotel staff, stayed in my room for one more night, left for Alexandria first thing the next morning, and drove straight through. There was no virtual option for the meeting, so I missed it entirely.

For the two days I was there, though, I had some great birding at Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive and Orlando Wetlands Park, and among other things I captured this video of a very agitated common gallinule. Lots more bird videos (plus a few others) are on my YouTube channel.

Volvox wall art

I posted earlier this week about some Chlamydomonas art, just in time for the holidays. Also still available, though, are prints on canvas of Volvox aureus, in the most niche Etsy store ever:

These look great if I do say, and they are ready to hang. 12″ x 12″, $40 on Etsy…would make a great gift for microbe enthusiasts. I still have four of the original eight.

One-stop shopping

I have an Etsy store. I opened it around the time of the Volvox wall art giveaway, and I’ll be the first to admit that it has a limited selection. Exclusive, you might say.

But I can promise you this: it is the world’s foremost source for micrographs of Volvox aureus printed on canvas. It is truly one-stop shopping if the only thing you need is micrographs of Volvox aureus printed on canvas (what else could you need?). If you are in the market for micrographs of Volvox aureus printed on canvas, you need look no further. Unless you can convince Piotr or Katrin to give up theirs, it is probably the only source for micrographs of Volvox aureus printed on canvas.

Reminder: last day to enter the Volvox wall art giveaway

Today is the last day to enter the drawing for a ready-to-hang print of Volvox aureus on canvas. There’s no catch; all you have to do is go to freethoughtblogs.com/fierceroller/?p=5256 and leave a comment with your favorite species (of anything). That’s it!

Right now there are only a dozen entries, so your odds of winning are pretty good. The winner will be announced on Monday.

Volvox wall art giveaway!

I had eight prints made (on canvas) of a micrograph I took in grad school of Volvox aureus. They turned out much better than I expected…it’s really hard to know how the color balance of something you’re looking at on a computer screen will look when it’s printed out. I’m going to give one away by random drawing. All you have to do to enter is leave a comment identifying your favorite species (of anything; rules below).
