Mt. Lofty

Some beautiful night shots from Lofty,

Well it was too hot to sleep well this morning, so I got up at 4:30am and rode my bicycle across the top of our little mountain, Mt Lofty. The city lights sparkled below while the Flinders Column kept watch with the planet Venus looking over its shoulder. The restaurant lights allowed the local magpies to forage for moths and stuff. After a quiet moment I swoosh back home at 60km/h for a cup of tea and breakfast. The forecast top for the city today is for 41°C. Some places in the deserts north of us reached 47-48°C yesterday.

I hope you’re finding ways to stay cool, Lofty. Thanks for sharing.

    Gorgeous shots.
I hope somebody in the Northern hemisphere got the lunar eclipse. I saw the shadow leaving the moon while driving to work.

No picutres of lunar eclipse from me, it was cloudy, a recurrent problem of living i the rain shadow of the Pennines.

I like the town at night picture.

Pretty pictures. Stay safe, Lofty, over 40°C is life threatening.

No pictures of eclipse from me either, because 1) I was sleeping and 2) it was completely overcast the whole last two days anyway.

I found some photos in media, but didn’t get any myself.
What I love about these pictures? The column: so dramatic. Second? Venus and its partner. Because I stared at the same two celestial bodies this morning on the station platform. To my right was the penumbral moon, to my left -- these two in their slowdance through the universe.
Thanks for sharing, and I sure hope the heat lets up soon!

I rode up Mt Lofty again this morning to be greeted by the full moon setting over the city. The sun was about to rise on the other side of the mountain and the morning birds were very busy. Fortunately our house has adequate air conditioning to cope with the heat, it’s not extravagantly powerful but it takes the edge off it. It’s also a few degrees cooler outside than in the city, being up the hill a ways. The forecast for Thursday is for 44°C, the northern regions will be hotter than that. I feel that more temperature records will be broken in 2019 than 2018.

    Beautiful night shots!
I also didn’t get the lunar eclipse. The sky was clear, but I was asleep. The moon was gorgeous yesterday night when I left the lab (yeah, it was one of those days).

And they’ve just found the body of the dashing young sea captain after whom the commemorative column is named.

Wow! Richard III got stuck under a parking lot, I think a metro station is much more glamourous.
The extra links the article has are interesting, too.

    Lofty,
Thanks for the link to the story about Matthew Flinders. It’s a very interesting article.
