Some of the buildings had inscriptions either in the woodwork or in the plaster. Some of the older ones represent possibly medieval equivalent of twitter – quips and deepities.

The Beautiful Town Idstein – Part 9 – Inscriptions
The gate with the blackletter inscription is great if you can live by it, if I have deciphered it correctly. Doesn’t it say:
Hate-Envy
Chicanery and Hypocrisy
goes past my House
?
While the last is in Roman script it’s hard to make heads and tails out of it. It’s handsome, however.
These are interesting, all.
Some of those signs are pretty darned old. I think it’s fabulous that they’re still around.
