Former Mormons declare independence from LDS church

Dozens of Mormons from three states gathered in a Salt Lake City park to declare independence from the LDS church. Key to their discontent was the intolerance and social conservatism pushed onto Mormon members by the old guard and traditional doctrine.

Ancient impact crater may be largest ever found

120628-CraterPhoto-hmed-1115a_files_grid-6x2

Scientists in Greenland have uncovered evidence for what may be the oldest impact crater ever found. And it would be hard to find one much older, because Greenland has some of the oldest exposed rock on earth. It’s also good it happened a long time ago — this impact was huge:

JT gets some (good) atheist press

A new article in a heavily evangelical state features the Secular Student Alliance, and the words of JT Eberhard. If that name sounds familiar, it’s because JT blogs here under the shingle WhatWouldJT Do?

Enjoy your extra looong Saturday

220px-Tidal_braking_svg

Courtesy of our moon, you get an extra long Saturday this weekend: one second longer. It’s because of the earth-moon interaction, the moon tugs on the earth’s tidal bulge, earth returns the favor by accelerating the moon slightly and pushing it further away. But user name Charles Dumbwin claims atheism is really Satanism. He or she has a sort of, umm, thesis I guess you could say, for that opinion and actually …

Amazing MRI clip captures human birth

There should be a Youtube version of the Oscars, and if there was, this short clip by Bamberg C, Rademacher G, Güttler F, et al “Human birth observed in real-time open magnetic resonance imaging,” would be in contention for the science and education categrory.

The empire strikes back, sort of …

Angry over Attorney General Holder’s efforts to preserve voting rights, and furious after the unexpected blow delivered by Chief Justice John Roberts, the evil empire hit back late yesterday. Fortunately, unlike the Star Wars namesake, it was a pitiful counter-strike. One based on bullshit and distortions whipped up by conservatives with a grudge, and an ill-conceived Bush era program …

Maybe dinosaurs aren’t so cool after all

Most kids, and a few of us “older” kids, may think dinos are way cool. But a new study says no: they were hot, as in hot-blooded. And that may go for some of the larger ones:
