Tree Tuesday

Tree Tuesday gets around and this week we’re in Finland on Uunisaari Island in Helsinki with a grouping of birch trees sent to us by Ice Swimmer. Birches are a favourite of mine and Ice Swimmer’s photograph shows them off perfectly with that beautiful white bark standing out in the sun and their small, delicate leaves silhouetted against the blue sky. Gorgeous.

Thanks Ice Swimmer.

Thank you all for your kind words!

The small, delicate leaves of a birch are for me the default deciduous tree leaves. Birches, alders, willows, rowans and maples were my childhood broad leaf trees*. There could be a bird cherry or two, lindens in the city, but everything else was special and fairly rare to see.

    * = The forests tend to be mainly pine and spruce forest, but deciduous trees are more common near human dwellings.
