The cops out at Standing Rock have now managed to blow apart most of a young woman’s arm. That’s just the grisliest of the very high list of injuries. Naturally, cops are denying responsibility, which won’t surprise anyone at all. They are doing what all cops do – lie.

Our veterans want to help, and to do that, they need some help from all of you. If you can help, please, do so. If you are unable to donate, please spread the word. What is happening here is damn wrong. It’s fucking wrong, and everyone knows that, and still, there’s nothing but silence. Please help. Lila wopila.

Alright, I’ve donated a small amount. By the way, a few days ago I was listening to a song which reminded me of this situation. It’s a song which has come to simbolize our people’s struggle with the military dictatorships. I’d like to dedicate it to you (for your recent birthday!) and the people at Standing Rock. The writer is an Argentinian poet called María Elena Walsh and this version, perhaps the most famous of all, is sung by Mercedes Sosa, an indigenous artist. Here’s a video, and here are the translated lyrics:

    LIKE THE CICADA

So many times I was killed
    So many times I died
    nonetheless I’m still here
    coming back to life.

    I’m grateful to misfortune
and the hand holding the knife
for it did such a bad job at killing me
    and I carried on singing.

    CHORUS:
    Singing to the sun
    like the cicada
after a year under the earth
    like a survivor
who is coming back from war.

So many times I was erased
    So many times I disappeared
    I attended my own funeral
    alone and crying.

I made a knot on the handkerchief
    but then I forgot
that it was not the first time
    and I carried on singing.

    [CHORUS]

So many times you were killed
So many times you will come back to life
How many nights you will spend
    in desperation
and at the time of the shipwreck
    and of darkness
    somebody will rescue you
    to carry on singing.

    [CHORUS]

This came to me via Daily Kos, numbers to call and a script to demand the DOJ come down on Morton County Sheriff for their cruelty and violence:

Call the Department of Justice and demand they investigate and charge the Morton County Sheriff’s Department for these life-threatening attacks on peaceful unarmed protectors immediately! Here is the number and a sample script:

    Department of Justice phone numbers:
Main: 202-514-2000, press 0. (This one has been hard to get through.)
    Department Comment Line: 202-353-1555

Hello, my name is ___________. I am horrified by the violence used by Morton County officers against the Standing Rock water protectors Sunday night. It is torture to douse people in water, in below freezing temperatures, for hours. People could die from this inhumane escalation. These officers willingly risked killing peacefully assembled protectors. The DOJ needs to investigate these actions as violations of human rights and civil rights, including the First Amendment.
