The image, above, is a real image. It is not photoshopped. A photographer by the name of Colin McCarthy captured this moment on his Instagram account (@Colinnnnn) and said the following:
Friends at #standingrock please be safe, this man just plowed through a peaceful prayer ceremony waving a gun, injuring 2 people and then proceeded to fire 7 shots into the air. Women, children and elders all running to get out of the way…
So there’s that.

The word genocide is relevant here.

Fuck yeah. The word genocide is always relevant
I wonder how many indigenous peoples of Africa were entirely wiped out in the slave trade? How many indigenous peoples of the Americas have been entirely wiped out? And now the nations that remain face guns when trying to preserve the land that preserves their lives and their peoples, as “peoples” and not just a number of persons the US gov’t has separated, dispersed & individualized…
Yeah, genocide is always relevant.

I’m ashamed to say that I hadn’t asked that question until around August of this year. And what I learned was this:
Depending on the historian, there are estimates ranging from 25 million indigenous americans to 200 million. Consensus estimates are around 50 million. Let’s use that as a start. Currently there are about 4 million indigenous americans or descendants/relatives of indigenous (obviously there’s some blending, some identify as indigenous so they’re in the 4 million). The number is 60 million if you include both of the Americas.
Another way of putting it is that the indigenous population of the US is %0.4. Down from 100% to 0.4% is the true measurement of the genocide, and also a measure of the political disempowerment of the victims.
