The Art of Book Design: Doctor Dick

Doctor Dick. London, Ernest Nister, New York, E.P. Dutton & Co., 1890

This is a short children’s storybook, but the artwork is charming. I’ve included the 4 full-page illustrations below the fold.

The illustrations remind me of “Glanzbilder” : high gloss cut outs usually depicting cute kids, pets or flowers. They were meant to be put into “poetry albums”, blank books where your friends would write down thoughtful verses.
