Either the inner rat cut him / herself (and might need some attention), or else somebirdy tried to eat the puppet and got a nasty rat-sized surprise (and probably urgently needs some attention (unless the attacker was a pea, but they are not noted for bleeding)†). Or the inner rat could just be a really enthusiastic painterpainteater…
† I suppose the hypothesized attacker could be a horse, which is why it’s so important to include a working flamethrower in your basic first aid kit.

That is a great shot! I love the coloring. How far away are you from the subjects? I guess you use a zoom lens to get such good close-up shots? Are you hidden from the birds, or do you just stay really still?

The rats powering the puppets are accustomed to her presence. Also, she’s been well-trained (well, squashed) and brings the paints to eat…

Generally, 8 to 25 feet. My big lens is a 70-300mm. My front windows open onto the front deck, and the birds are well aware of me, especially when I’m shooting with the window open. I do stay extremely still, and employ micro-movements. I shoot hand held, no tripod.

The picture’s so clear and the colour of the bird comes out strong in the mostly gray background.

What a colour! I didn’t think birds had that colour this side of the tropics
jimb says
Like Giliell, I had no idea a finch could be that color (notwithstanding blf‘s explanation :-)).
Love the color; great photo Caine!
