Newsweek Shocked to Find Racism In Its Establishment

Remember that Newsweek editorial saying that the first Black woman on a national ticket wasn’t really a citizen?

Yeah, apparently Newsweek’s top management got a bunch of internal pushback from the people that actually produce the product without which they’d go immediately bankrupt: the writers. Under threat of not having anything to sell and therefore no money, which would, presumably, not be the happiest outcome for the shareholders, Newsweek brass decided it was time for a walkback so that they could defend their decision, admit that they maybesortaprobly wouldn’t make the same decision in the future, acknowledge that Harris is an actual American human being, and hold their heads high that they have been good and reasonable throughout this trying time:

Newsweek Editor-in-Chief Nancy Cooper and opinion editor, a “Trump-backing conservative activist and attorney Josh Hammer,” apologized on Friday with a statement reading, “This op-ed is being used by some as a tool to perpetuate racism and xenophobia. We apologize. [T]o many readers, the essay inevitably conveyed the ugly message that Senator Kamala Harris, a woman of color and the child of immigrants, was somehow not truly American.

Well, sure, but only if you read it as it was intended to be read.

Likewise, to many readers, A Modest Proposal inevitably conveys the message British policies towards Ireland in Swift’s days were insufficiently humane.

Likewise, to many readers, Audre Lorde’s writing inevitably conveys the message that choosing not to speak out against injustice will not make those who inflict injustice on others determined to protect you.

Likewise, to many readers, Alan Ginsberg’s Sweet Boy, Gimme Yr Ass inevitably communicated that Ginsberg harbored some desires that were a bit gay.

Likewise, to many readers, this comment inevitably communicated the contempt which Crip Dyke holds for Newsweek Editor-in-Chief Nancy Cooper and opinion editor Josh Hammer.

  1. Who Cares says

The job description of an editor contains the following : “checks for accuracy and fairness in the newspaper’s articles and writes headlines”.
So we know who wanted to perpetuate the racism and xenophobia.
Only correct action by the Newsweek would have been to fire people since this is a clear dereliction of duty. Not have the people responsible write a note saying they are sorry they thought they could get away with others not using dogwhistle signaling.
