There was a bit of bad news when Jack saw the vet yesterday. It turns out that Larry the Lump™ was not a lipoma (fatty cyst), but instead is something called a spindle cell tumor. It’s a benign type of tumor so there’s no chance it will spread, but it will regrow. How fast it will regrow is anyone’s guess. It took about 5 years to reach its removal size of 10 cm. so we may need to deal with it again in a few years. I hope not. Jack is 10 now and is already a young senior citizen even though he thinks he’s still a puppy.
There was good news too, though. The incision has healed perfectly and the Dr. removed exactly the right amount of skin to allow totally free movement of the joint and not sag. She says that Jack and I may resume our adventures. Hooray! Here is the boy blissfully scenting the air at our local park.
Charly says
Well, at least it was not malignant tumor. Good for jack being able to go outside and enjoy frlolicking in snow a bit.
Jazzlet says
Glad it wasn’t a malignant tumour, and I hope it regrows very slowly. Yay for Jack being well healed with no tight or saggy skin, and for him being able to enjoy the snow!
Giliell says
Yay for Jack being allowed outdoors again, booh for tumour.
Though, if dogs are like humans in that respect, age slows down tumours as well.

Not good news but also not bad news, I would say. Hooray for more adventures!

Benign is a good word. I’m sure Jack will make sure you get your daily exercise….
Ice Swimmer says
I’m also hoping that the tumor will be slow to regrow.
It’s nice to see Jack back in action. The coat is stylish. It’s somewhere between a human coat and horse blanket (the latter would be called loimi in Finnish, the former would be takki). Is the coat because of the wound?
kestrel says
Agree with Ice Swimmer, the coat is very sporting. Is he allowed to go swimming yet, or just walking? He is being very well-behaved about the water in the photo. It’s not totally bad news about the tumor anyway, and here is hoping that it quite surprisedly does not grow back at all.
Good boy, Jack!
voyager says
Ice Swimmer,
The coat is only temporary. The wound has healed, but Jack’s fur hasn’t grown back yet and he has a big bald spot. Jack knows how to grow hair, though, so I expect he’ll be fine in a week or two.
rq says
I like the coat. Needs a tie, but it’s very dapper. :D
I’m glad Jack is out and about and feeling good, and well done, vet surgeon!
Nightjar says
Good to see Jack ready for more adventures! Hoping for a very slow regrowth of Larry the Lump and many more years of Jack feeling like a puppy. :)

Awww. Glad to hear Jack can be out and about again.
