Barcelona: Camping 4: Bougainvillea envy

This is not our first time at that camp site, but the earliest we’ve been there in summer, so many plants were still in bloom that you don’t see later, among them the big bougainvillea hedges.

I simply love that flower, but of course you can only grow it in pots in Germany and even when taken inside over winter they never reach the glory of their Mediterranean cousins.

Picure #3. It transports. #4 is pretty awesome too, but the more diffuse light of #3 adds magic.

Oh, these just make my heart ache! I love love love Bougainvillea, they grew all over in SoCal, and have been a fave of mine since early sproghood. The house we lived in had a gigantic one growing by the back door, up to the roof, and over the top. No hope of having that here.

    I love the vivid colour.

Bougainvillea is also grown as a houseplant in Finland. The Finnish name is ihmeköynnös, that is “miracle vine” (ihme = miracle).

Oh, I have a big one just outside my bedroom window and since it faces west, I often get the opportunity to photograph sunsets through the bougainvillea flowers. Not right now, it’s a bit behind this year and the first flowers are just now opening. But I never realized I was so lucky. A bougainvillea in a pot is actually something that never occurred to me, I always think of it as the kind of plant that will cover your house if you forget to prune it every year. I see Caine has the same kind of image in her mind. :)

    What gorgeous colour and light.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a bougainvillea in real life. Only in photos.
