Apparently, Sheriff Steve Prattor is not the least abashed in hollering out his displeasure over non-violent convicts being released early.
Steve Prattor, the Sheriff of Caddo Parish in Louisiana, is not a fan of his state’s new criminal justice reforms that will free many prisoners convicted of nonviolent offenses earlier than they had been scheduled to be released.
In a press conference held this week, Prattor said that keeping some of the “good” prisoners in jail was necessary for the prisons to keep functioning because they could provide needed labor that you couldn’t get out of more violent and dangerous prisoners.
“The [prisoners] that you can work, the ones that can pick up trash, the work release programs — but guess what? Those are the ones that they’re releasing!” Prattor fumed in his attack against criminal justice reforms. “In addition to the bad ones… they’re releasing some good ones that we use every day to wash cars, to change the oil in our cars, to cook in the kitchen… well, they’re going to let them out!”
My, my, you’re going to lose your slaves, what a pity. Perhaps you should learn to wash your own cars, how to change the oil in them, and strap an apron on, Sheriff, and get your arse to work.

I am a bad person, because all I can think of is that Turkish guy who suddenly pulled a gun and shot the Russian ambassador, and how that little segment would have been dramatically improved if one of those cops behind him had felt threatened and had blown Prattor’s brains out.
Caine, I was thinking the same today, when I read that article on rawstory. That guy really loves his slavery.

The real problem is that the US doesn’t actually prohibit slavery and involuntary servitude for convicts.
All it means is he should really get into the reformatory aspects of jail-time and start putting his back into it -- the system is failing, if he can’t get the hardcore criminal types to do any work around the house. *tsk tsk*
Can he hear himself? (I think the answer here is ‘no’.) I am, quite honestly, astounded at how obvious he is -- and how obviously despicable his ideas are (and heck, probably he himself is!).
The real problem is that the penal system in uStates is not based on rehabilitation in any way. It’s purely punishment based, and nothing ever changes, even when programs show that rehabilitation does work, like cell dogs, where prisoners are selected to train ‘hopeless’ dogs for disabled people. The effect on prisoners is damn near overwhelming in a positive sense, and it definitely teaches valuable skill sets.
Using some people as personal slaves does not rehabilitate, and neither does letting all the rest of the prisoners rot.
This goon presumably has plenty of deputy goons. Quite probably, this goon and many of his deputy goons belong in his gaol. Putting them there solves his alleged problem, and should also reduce the problems this goon and his deputy goons cause.
On rehabilitation, there was a fascinating article about another program which seems to work in the New York Times a few months ago, The Incarcerated Women Who Fight California’s Wildfires. However, there are problems. The one that particularly infuriated me when I first read the article is this: Despite the investment California makes in training these all-volunteer firecrews (albeit it is a very abbreviated training program), it tends to abandon the members on release:

Yes, that’s standard, even among prisons which are considered to be mildly progressive by having rehab programs -- they help, and make a difference, but only while people are in prison. They don’t give a shit about you once you’re out.
