Said pelican was standing quite still, waiting for the person who was catching carp at the rivers edge to move just a little further from the bucket…I walked the bike veeery slowly past the pelican trying to not look too piscine.
I am so jealous. You just cannot get anywhere near that close to birds here. Birds don’t trust humans at all, and with good reason, pretty much everything gets shot at here. The closest I’ve been to pelicans so far had the distance of a very large lake between us.
Yes, a historically low gun count does make the wildlife less scared of humans. And if a pelican tries to chomp off the arm of a small child holding a snack, the parent is blamed not the bird.

Seems the pelican is sporting the fashionable feather-do on the head. Otherwise the pelican is quite its own dinosaur with a unique style. Gorgeous pictures.
