Someone famous came out with a cover recently, it’s a lot more melodramatic. On the other hand, Don McLean is supposedly kind of an asshole, which ruined his version of it for me. A little, because it’s beautiful.
Then again, his Empty Chairs is the ultimate statement on not listening [to women]. So I dunno, he wrote some insightful songs.

It’s a song that always touched me, long before I understood the words.
BTW, as a teen I once visited some of the places in Southern France where he lived and painted (and died). It was a strange feeling to find yourself somehow standing within a world-famous picture.

The crows over the field will always be my favourite.
Strange how an image painted in such broad strokes can be so true to the thing.

The person who put the video together said they did it to try and show a friend why they loved Vincent’s work so much. I think it was a stroke of genius.

I have a deep and abiding love for that painting. The wheatfield looks like a river of gold flowing into the ocean (sky), and the crows are perfect.

This is where ignorance is bliss. I don’t know one damn thing about McLean, and I don’t care to know. Most people are assholes. I wouldn’t want a dramatic version of this song, it would seem wrong.

This has been my favourite song since I was a teenager. I drove my mother crazy by playing it over and over again. It even inspired me to write a few angst ridden poems. I still play it often. I think the whole album is beautiful.
I don’t really want to know about Don McLean’s assholeness…sometimes ignorance is bliss. This version is beautiful set against the artists work. I am most captivated by his portraits. They carry so much emotion. Thanks Caine.
