This one was so cute -- so young, that he was actually scared into listening to me. I put out a special pile of sunseeds for him.

The coloration is reminiscent of an ember, just that the glow is on the belly side and the back is ash and charcoal.

Squirrels are returning to the trees in front of my window after one got sick and died in the summer. Just saw one red squirrel with a black tail today climbing in the oak, maybe acorns are getting ripe.

How beautiful! If you can get a photo, I’ll post it. :D

Around here, squirrels often pick up mange, and if it isn’t treated, they die, and it’s a long and nasty death. Healthy squirrels will clear an area like that here, for a while, so they don’t pick it up themselves.

Ice Swimmer @5, you have such a wonderful way of describing pictures! It helps me see them better, your comments always encourage a second look. :-D

The squirrels have been way too quick for me to photograph. The one I saw today was on the other side of the oak as soon as it saw me move a bit.

    Thanks! 8-)

I don’t think the deceased squirrel here had mange, the fur was clean and there were no bald spots or visible rash. The only sign of something wrong was the squirrel lying on the ground (it bolted to the trees when someone came too close and a few day later it lay dead on the same spot). At the time there was a virus epidemic killing feral rabbits, maybe the squirrel had the same disease.
