Nonetheless, when reporters asked the new president how the new policies are being received, he said, “It’s not a Muslim ban, but we’re totally prepared. It’s working out very nicely. You see it at the airports, you see it all over. It’s working out very nicely and we’re gonna have a very, very strict ban and we’re going to have extreme vetting, which we should have had in this country for many years.”

I imagine this could ultimately lead to more people overstaying visas and thus adding to the number of undocumented people in the US. People are now afraid that if they leave, they will never be able to return for any reason or ever get a visa again. I work with from all over the world, sometimes not permanently. (obviously, I don’t assume who is or isn’t a citizen, but many are here for academic reasons) I worry that anyone who is not a citizen will now not be able to see families outside of the US again, even for a funeral. Frankly, if I were someone not from one of the banned countries, I’d still be worried to leave. Who knows when one’s country might be added to the list with the stroke of a pen.
Of course other countries will retaliate. Just like with the trade wars. Trump thinks he can just bully each and everybody into submission and doesn’t get that it won’t work like that.
Us economy will suffer, as will the rest of the world.
Also, they need to intercut that bullshit with the images from the airports.

Jesus fuckin’ vomited. That poor man, his family. This is the face of terrorism. This is the face of unblinking evil. Earlier, I was reading about a Chilean woman trapped at an airport, denied refuge, and going to be sent back. She tried to kill herself.
I don’t think I’ve ever been so deeply ashamed to be an american. So many people in this country are just fine with this evil. They can’t even manage to think for 5 fucking seconds -- who in the hell wants to be a refugee? No one, that’s who. Leaving your home, uprooting your whole life, struggling, facing bias and hatred, having to start all over again? Yeah, sure, people do that sort of thing just for fucking fun. Christ, I hate this. Sitting here wracked with tears and not knowing what to do.
I don’t know what to make of this or any of the other lies I hear about the ban. I don’t know how to talk to its supporters.
How do I explain to people how safe they already are? How do I explain that orders like this are likely to diminish their safety by stoking animosity and hatred and stymieing diplomacy? We’ve been having this conversation since September of 2001 to no avail.
I feel like I should understand what people need to hear because I used to be one of the people innumerately and uncompassionately afraid of Islam and of Muslims and now I’m not, but honestly that doesn’t seem to help.
This. Because this gets reduced to ‘economic migrant’ more times than I can count, because people fleeing war and oppression and torture are only in it for the easy living and government-provided housing and a monthly paycheck, because obviously they just don’t have the guts to make it in their own country, and if they had the money to pay for that dangerous boat crossing, then they damn well had the money to stay in their own country… This is how people harden their hearts against refugees, real actual refugees, and while we’re at it, why the fuck shouldn’t people go look for better living purely based on economic reasons? Because people can’t look past their own damn selfish noses, because they’re projecting their own preconceptions onto those living lives they could never imagine. Fuck that. Fuck this shit.
