As the ongoing Apocalypse was the subject of today’s Sunday Facepalm, it reminded me that I’ve had some time to look at the artwork in The Bamberg Apocalypse, an 11th-century richly illuminated manuscript containing the Book of Revelation and a Gospel Lectionary. Look at those beautiful beasties! One day, I shall embroider them. Click for full size!

If only the real apocalypse would have so many fantastical beasts, it might almost be worth it. Almost.

Aren’t they beautiful? These are all miniatures, too. I adore the dragon in the 2nd one. The gold, copper, and silver work is stunning. I’d love to replicate that in thread, although I don’t think I could afford that level of gold and silver threads.

I know they’re meant to be frightening, but they’re absolutely charming and quite adorable. And in miniature? Amazing, expressive artistry.

Gorgeous!
I got out one of my bibles and tried to follow along.
