Science as the stuff that works

I love xkcd despite the fact of the creator’s obvious physics bias, but it looks like he’s finally learning to appreciate the power of biology, too.

Science is the tool that defines our culture, like flint handaxes or pottery beakers defined previous cultures, and it’s a generalized tool that cuts across disciplines and ought to shape our minds…and it does, even among the people who try to reject it.

I get email

Ah, screw it, I’m not even going to try to unravel this one.

Chose you from many Atheists on the marching band War…

It seems a waste of vodka

Somebody is angling for an Ig-Nobel, I think. Apparently, it’s a Danish myth that you can absorb alcohol through your feet, so soaking your feet in a tub of spirits is a way to get drunk (they also mention that soaking your feet in beet juice will make your urine red, but they didn’t test that one, unfortunately). So the hypothesis that one can get drunk through your feet was thoroughly tested.

The participants abstained from consuming alcohol 24 hours before the experiment. The evening before the experiment they rubbed their feet with a loofah to remove skin debris. On the day of the experiment, a baseline blood sample was taken through a venous line. The participants then submerged their feet in a washing-up bowl containing the contents of three 700 mL bottles of vodka (Karloff vodka; M R Štefánika, Cífer, Slovakia, 37.5% by volume). Before each blood sample was taken the venous catheter and cannula were flushed with saline by a trained study nurse. Plasma ethanol concentrations were determined every 30 minutes for three hours. Blood samples were taken to the laboratory for immediate analysis by the study nurse. Plasma ethanol concentrations, measured as soon as possible in case of rapid and potentially fatal increases, were determined using a photometric method, with a detection limit of 2.2 mmol/L (10 mg/100 mL, corresponding to 0.010% weight/volume). Participants simultaneously recorded intoxication related symptoms (self confidence, urge to speak, and number of spontaneous hugs) on an arbitrary scale from 0 to 10.

The results: it didn’t work. Blood alcohol levels didn’t even rise to testable levels, and no one felt an urge to start hugging.

I’m sure you’re all disappointed now. If you’re disappointed because we don’t know what happened to the 2100 mL of vodka after the experiment, you should be worried about your possible alcoholism.

The authors left several questions open.

Many questions are still to be answered in the research specialty of alcohol transport across non-gastrointestinal barriers. This study has shown that feet are impenetrable to the alcohol component of Karloff vodka. Other stronger beverages, beetroot juice, or combinations of juices and alcoholic beverages may, however, cross the epithelial barrier of the skin. Moreover, new pastimes, such as “eyeball drinking,” have emerged. The significance of this activity is unknown. Rumour has it that it makes you drunk fast . . . and may damage your eyes.

Wait. Eyeball…drinking? What’s up with those Danes?

Wow, that number keeps going up

In their invisible feasibility study, proponents of the very silly Ark theme park in Kentucky claimed it would create 900 jobs. Now a mysterious consultant claims it will be even more effective:

The ripple effect of the first year in job creation will be over 14,000 new jobs.

But wait! That’s not big enough! Here comes Ken Ham to fluff the statistics a little more.

A lot of left-wing media and bloggers have reacted very negatively, writing a lot of false information. They only represent a minority of the people in this nation. The majority of people in this area and across the nation are supportive. The statistics show about 200 million people would want to come if the ark were rebuilt. Locally, the majority of people are really thrilled because it’s family-friendly and it would bring hundreds of jobs to the region.

The current US population is a bit over 300 million…so Ken Ham is waving around two thirds of the population of the country as prospective customers, if only the state will give him some support? Does anyone believe this guy?

Imagine you’re a tourist visiting the Cincinnati area. You’ve got the choice of taking the family to Kings Island, a major recreational park nearby, or the equivalent of Heritage USA, an evangelical Christian park with no rides, presided over by a creepy Australian dude who demands that you obey his ‘literal’ interpretation of the Bible or burn in hell.

Do you think the creepy dude actually has a realistic business plan?

Not even wrong, again

Creationists say the weirdest things. Every once in a while, someone sends me a creationist quote that reveals exactly how clueless and ignorant these guys are, because they start lecturing people on biology, a subject they clearly know nothing about. We’ve got a local boy named Brock Lee in Owatonna who is fond of writing amazing letters to the newspapers — I’ve mentioned him before — and here’s a remarkable example of creationist inanity. Look at the conclusions he draws from the biological species concept:

What is a species? The evolutionary answer seems simple enough: a species is an interbreeding population.

Most people walk away from biology classes with this definition, and it is this definition which causes problems. (In the first DVD of Hovind’s debate series, you can hear one college student give this exact definition.)

Notice that by this definition, those that are not interbreeding are not part of the species. This means that a virgin is not, by this definition, a human. If you use this definition, child sacrifice would not be considered murder, since murder only applies to humans; the child is not able to interbreed, and thus cannot meet the criteria of being in the human species. Do you see how something so simple as a wrong definition can have devastating effects?

Hormones, peers and the teaching of evolution work as a trifecta to push teens into being sexually active. Teens can control behavior and change friends, but the corrosive teaching of evolution will linger beyond them because it is ingrained in the modernist humanist belief system.

It is no surprise, then, that some teens in this town think sex stores are a good thing. They’ve been taught that sex is the only way to become human, and that even then humans have no value anyway because we’re part of the problem. The right approach is not simply to get rid of the store, but rather to destroy the false teachings which make such a store thrive.

As Kent Hovind says, “What you believe determines how you behave.” And when it comes to studying beliefs, begin at the beginning. If you would like to volunteer your time or talents to combat false teachings about origins, please contact me at brocklee@youngearthcreation.org.

God made sex, so use it as he says — in marriage.

Brock Lee

Got it, people? According to a creationist who claims that this is according to evolutionary biology, if you aren’t pregnant or having sex right now, you aren’t a human being, and we can kill you. And this is one of the reasons teenagers are having sex, because they’ve been taught that that “is the only way to become human”.

His source is Kent Hovind.

Well, ol’ Kent is in prison right now, and he sure isn’t procreating in there. Why would anyone care what a non-human said?

It does provide us with a new pick-up line, at least. “Help, my humanity is fading! Only you can restore it!” Let me know if it works for you.

Enhance!

Oh, man, my least favorite pseudoscientific cliche from movies and TV is the hackneyed “zoom in on that reflection in the eye of the guy we caught on the el cheapo RS-170 B&W surveillance cam and recorded on VHS…if we blow it up enough, we’ll be able to identify the killer!” It’s painfully common, too, as you’ll see in this montage of enhancing moments:

“Do you have an enhancer that can bitmap?” Somebody slap those writers.

Quantum atheists!

On Atheist Talk radio on Sunday morning at 9am Central time, James Kakalios will be joining the gang at Minnesota Atheists to talk about his new book, The Amazing Story of Quantum Mechanics: A Math-Free Exploration of the Science that Made Our World(amzn/b&n/abe/pwll). It should be very entertaining. The book looks good, although I’ve only had a chance to flip through it so far…but it’s right here by my side at the computer desk, and it’s on my short list of books to get read over break.

We also have some videos by Jim Kakalios, and here’s one…although I hesitate to put it here. The first time I put up one of his videos, the comments blew up and it turned into the precursor of today’s endless thread. Let’s not do that again, OK?

Do ask, do tell…with a poll

I’m so used to our do-nothing Democrats accomplishing nothing that I’m pleasantly surprised that they actually managed to repeal the “Don’t ask, don’t tell” policy afflicting our military. Congratulations, gay servicepeople!

Unfortunately, now we have to worry about marines’ legs falling off, and Fox News has gone whining to popular opinion with a poll (big numbers there, we probably won’t budge it much).

Will Ending ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ Affect America’s Ability to Defend Itself?

No — Being gay is about someone’s sexual preference, not their patriotism, acceptance of duty and their love of country. 40.84% (11,224 votes)

Undecided — We’re in a war in Afghanistan, and I’m not sure that this is the right time to undo something that will affect our men and women in combat. 5.28% (1,451 votes)

Yes — At the core of an effective military is trust, and allowing a lifestyle that might cause some members of our military to feel uncomfortable cuts to the heart of that trust. 52.6% (14,455 votes)

Other (post a comment) 1.28% (352 votes)

Expect further meltdowns and hysteria from the crazy religious right in the next few days — I’m already getting a buzz from the poor old Illinois Patriarchy Institute. We’re undermining the military by allowing the gay people already staffing our armed forces to admit that they exist!
