Deservedly. This was the scene in Minneapolis yesterday:
Donald Trump fantasizes about crowd sizes like that. This one turned out in opposition to him, and they did it on the coldest day of the year so far. You tell Minnesotans that it’s going to be -20°F, and they shrug and pull another layer out of the mud room closet.
And not just Minnesotans: here are my sisters in the balmy Pacific Northwest (and my brother, who isn’t in the photo), declaring what they think in solidarity with the entire nation.
There’s a good feeling that comes with doing the right thing, and people across the country should be feeling that right now. There’s also a feeling of righteousness that comes with being a victim of injustice, and that’s rising hard here in Minnesota. We don’t deserve to be harassed and beaten and searched and murdered because we had done something wrong — those things are being done to us because 1) we are a blue state that voted against Trump in every election, and he takes that personally, and 2) because we have been welcoming to immigrants, and he (and Stephen Miller) are bigots who are lashing out at our friends and colleagues and community members. Punished by professing Christians for being kind to our neighbors, imagine that. It’s what I’ve come to expect from any vocal Christian.
OK, to be fair…
The decency of Minnesotans is mirrored in Lutheran churches seeding what has become the largest refugee population per capita in the United States. Minnesota has had a labor organizing movement since before it became a state. Minnesota created the first high-risk pool in the country to insure “the uninsurable” in 1976.
A word of warning: this isn’t over. We had a one day long general strike, and we can expect reprisals from the federal government. One day is not enough — we’re going to have to tighten our belts for a more prolonged effort, and this needs to spread beyond one state. I’m confident others will join in, because our enemy is a bully who doesn’t respond rationally, or in the best interest of the citizens.
Most importantly, know that what Trump is doing to Minneapolis is the template for what Trump wants to bring to your hometown next.
Minnesota’s general strike should be our template for how we respond nationally.
I’m going to stock up on dried beans and canned vegetables. My father was a blue collar union man, and we knew how to prepare for a strike.

Well done, Minnesota!
Another cold-blooded ICE produced murder in South Minneapolis this morning….
https://www.startribune.com/ice-raids-minnesota/601546426
I just posted this on the last thread but it can go here.
This was murder.
Reports are he was unarmed, on the ground, shot 5 times, and is dead.
There are videos of this murder. I refuse to watch them right now. They are horrible so you are warned, do what you want to.
Right now, I’m so angry I can barely type this.
Arrest these guys, charge them with murder. Now.
You hang in there PZ.
The gun fondlers of America claim that their collection is to protect their god-given American rights, so they can take up arms if their personal rights are ever violated by a tyrannical government. And the government which the vast majority of them support say that you should not even point a cellphone camera at the masked oppressive police, and that you’ll be killed even if you do completely obey every command and act non-violently.
As a Canadian, I’d like to think that ICE frightening so many non-white voters from the voting booths won’t be enough to keep the Republican majority in power. But after seeing Americans vote Trump back into all three powers of government for his second term, I know that such optimism is unwarranted.
FWIW, there’s this hopeful piece: https://www.salon.com/2026/01/19/some-trump-voters-are-sneaking-away/

Some Trump voters are sneaking away
They’ll never admit they’re wrong, but polling reveals quiet GOP regret

@ Morales
It’s probably worth this:

But I would dearly love to be wrong.
Quoting above link:
It shows how you can never predict history. Who would have imagined the epicenter for the resistance to contemporary fascism would be… Lake Wobegon.
Where all the women are strong, all the men are good looking, all the children are above average, and all the nazis get punched in the face.
@8. Silentbob : For once we agree.
I have ZERO expectation that USA midterms will be allowed to happen or be anything but a rigged as fuck sham if they do.
I did try to warn everyone back when the final free & fair~ish (or was it?) election was happening over in the USA.
Kamala Harris becoming POTUS was the USA’s last hope. Last chance. “You” (Americans able to vote – ed) blew it. Too many of you anyhow. Every rational, good American should’ve looked at the options and said “Trump fuck no! We’ll vote Kamala to stop him.” Not enough did.
Now, my very bleak and reluctant assessment is that Trump will be invoking the Insurrection Act and using the USA’s military against the USA’s people any day soon now.
Then, reckon, your options are – from best to worst :
(A) Soldiers refuse illegal orders and stage a military coup. But Trump has his hand-picked generals in charge. So..unlikely?
(B) You have a massive Civil War. Again. Thousands, tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands die. Hate the thought of this but seems extremely likely ‘bout now.
(C) Total Fascist takeover and oppression. Trump transforms the USA into even more of an outright fascist kakistocracy. He and the project 2025 Theil, Yarvin, Vance mob get the ultimate victory. Most of the good people in the States die or are forced to flee into hiding or utterly suppressed. The USA becomes approx. what 1930’s Nazi Germany was only English speaking and armed with nuclear WMDs and their conventional already excessively massive and powerful military. Musk creams himself and he and other billionaires rule the world. Even more than they now do. Exponentially so. As we seem headed for.
Fuck.
Sure hope I am wrong about this. Please convince me I’m wrong.. Please. Please, please do.
But I think history’s verdict is already getting inked in ever deeper and clearer here.
Indelibly so even.
Fuck again and repeatedly and so many other useless expletives here.
You’re not wrong that you hope you are wrong, but the election claim is ridiculous, speculative, and premature.
Brynn Tannehill, BTW, is one of those clickbait claimants whose punditry is patterned by repeatedly presenting unsupported extrapolations as certainties. Impresses the saps.
