The three men who chased down and killed Ahmaud Arbery as the Black man was jogging in a suburban Georgia neighborhood last year were found guilty by a jury Wednesday, bringing an end to a contentious trial.

The men were found guilty of felony murder, aggravated assault, false imprisonment and criminal attempt to commit a felony. Travis McMichael, the one who actually shot Arbery, was also convicted of malice murder.

Fuck these motherfuckers. They all face maximum sentences of life imprisonment, and I hope they all die in prison.

I saw this meme (of sorts) yesterday: it’s a quote from prosecutor Joyce Vance’s closing argument.

Picture of prosecutor Joyce Vance and text: "The Murder of Ahmsud Arbery: All you need to understand how ludicrous the defense is, is to imagine a Black person making a citizen's arrest of a white person jogging through their neighborhood, and then CORNERING them with a car and SHOOTING them because the didn't want to talk."

Yes, imagine that!

And remember: this case was pulled from local police after two months of complete inaction. It was only after video of the incident taken by one of the defendants surfaced and went viral that public outcry ensued, and the State took over the (virtually non-existent) investigation.

There can be no real justice for Ahmaud Arbery because his life can never be restored. I grieve (again goddammit) for him, for his loved ones, and for all Black communities who continue to suffer from racist violence, the criminal injustice system and systemic racism in ways I can never really understand. I hope today’s verdict offers some consolation and peace, in whatever small way it can.

Yes, it’s one small positive step.

It took a video and so much time, money and effort. To reach the blatantly obvious verdict.

Still. Beats the alternative I guess. But an awful long way to go.
