So Richard Dawkins is calling astronomer Jennifer L Hoffman a pompous idiot then.
Jennifer L. Hoffman @astroprofhoff
.@weswt @missafayres Am I serious about being respected by colleagues in my professional environment? Uh, yes. #shirtstorm

I wonder how many other colleagues and perhaps friends he’s calling pompous idiots.
I think I’ll collect some. Feel free to assist.
There’s Phil Plait:
I tweet about the sexist shirt worn by a scientist & get thoughtful replies. @roseveleth does the same and gets monumentally harassed.

And Sean Carroll:
I’m sure Dawkins regards both as pompous radical feminists just looking to stir up blog hits.
Simon Frankel Pratt says
Add my name to the list. I’m entirely willing to believe that Dr. Matt Taylor respects women in important ways, and treats his female colleagues with dignity on an ordinary basis. His failure to think about the context and connotations of wearing a shirt covered in sexualised women, however, was disrespectful. Part of respecting women is understanding how they are far more likely to be dismissed and objectified than are men, and at the very least avoiding actively contributing to that culture. Those who point out that a female scientist would be very unlikely to wear a shirt depicting scantily clad men are on to something; it would be jarringly out of the ordinary, and probably seem pretty inappropriate. Maybe it shouldn’t be, but neither the scientific community nor society in general is at the point where that kind of symmetry is possible. And for the record, as a gay man I would never wear ‘my version’ of a shirt like that in my professional or academic life because science should not be a space in which we sexually objectify anyone.

So add Janet D. Stemwedel to that list.

It’s useful to remember that this is still the same Dawkins who pledged with Ophelia to engage in more civil discourse.

Jackie says
Dawkins called other people pompous?
Someone should tell him that individuals who dwell in transparent abodes should refrain from promiscuously hurling geological specimens.
True story. 😉
Jackie says
A Dawkins supporter tweeted at Carolyn Porco that criticizing a man wearing a sexist shirt is like blaming a woman for being raped because of what she was wearing.
Does Dawkins not see what sort of knuckle dragging dipdshits agree with him or the horrible shit they are now tweeting at women scientists he claims to respect?
How do people manage to be so obtuse?
Hj Hornbeck says
Oops, we’ve forgotten Maggie Koerth-Baker.
Brony says
This post precisely fits into Dawkins’s social blind spot.
If there is one common denominator to the trouble that he has been causing over the last several years is that he firmly believes that he should not have to ever care about the effects of his language or actions on others. When others then use words or take actions that impact on him emotionally, he immediately squeals like we are witch hunters starting an inquisition. This is in addition to the fact that his basic message is for people to stop fighting for social justice that he does not like.
This man defines hypocrisy and projection.
Pieter B, FCD says
I think it’s quite telling that Dawkins took down a tweet “out of respect” for Dr Porco, not out of respect for women in general. Does a woman have to have a doctorate and an impressive CV before Dawkins respects her? Sounds like a defensible hypothesis.
Alan Cooper says
Well I’ll say one thing for Richard Dawkins. He’s the most successful TROLL in the universe. No matter what the story, his response always ensures that in the end it will be all about him.
