Martin Wagner and Tim Minchin sum it up

Martin comments on Chris Clarke’s post:

These last two threads have put me in mind of Tim Minchin’s lovely “Pope Song,” which includes the lyrics…

If you cover for another motherfucker who’s a kiddie fucker Fuck you you’re no better then the mother fucking rapist

…and then I wonder how many of these dudes showing up here to complain that it’s so unfair to draw moral equivalency between everyday, blogging, comment-trolling, rape-threat-making-on-Reddit misogynists and mass-murdering-IRL misogynists are huge fans of that song.

Another good comment there – crowepps @ 74 – Henry II on the turbulent priest, Iago, the Salem witch trials, and –

“Now, we have bad news to report that Tiller the baby killer out in Kansas, acquitted. Acquitted today of murdering babies. I wasn’t in the courtroom. I didn’t sit on the jury. But this, there’s got to be a special place in hell for this guy.” Bill O’Reilly

There are a lot of good comments on that thread.

One of my favorite Tim Minchin quotes is from Storm, “Throughout history every mystery ever solved has turned out to be…Not Magic!”

This just goes to show how deep seated rape culture really is.

These guys would not be defending racist talk. They would not be saying ‘hey, its totes cool to talk about genocide its not like we are Hitler’.

But it just feels *natural* to talk shit about women, and not make the connection that hate speech against women results in hate-acts against women.

In the comparison to racism, it’d be more like talking about how horrible Jews are and talking about them having a secret conspiracy to rule the world and destroy your nation…but it’s not like you’d ever advocate killing all of them. I mean, it’s only the natural end to which those views lead…

Though racism does have an ugly tendency to lead towards genocide, especially if you include biblical accounts where one chosen race of people ran around killing people too dirty and sinful to be allowed to even live.

But back to women. I try to stay out of some of the stuff. I know the ugly comments are there and there’s a limit to how much I want to cultivate my ability to hold down disgust at the idiocy of some people. Same reason I stay away from FSTDT these days.

It’s not going to kill them to treat women like full fledged members of humanity that have inherent dignity and full rights and all that. Neither feminists or the government are coming to take our balls or guns. So you think this is all a bunch of joking getting blown out of proportion by people wanting to be offended? For one thing, get some comedic sense. Rape is rarely funny. Carlin had a good bit with Elmer Fudd and Porky Pig, but even he was saying it took some thought to make a rape joke that worked. The problem with most of it is the amount of sexism actually occurring. It is hard to make a joke about doing something that’s actually happening to some people.

A joke works when the subject is someone(s) on the same level or higher than the intended audience. Jokes rarely if ever work when the subject is beneath the audience. Then the joke becomes a form of bullying. Tim Minchin can sing extremely rude things about the Pope because subject is the head of a church. Rape jokes don’t work because women are lesser then men in the eyes of the jokester.
