Gimme that old time religious … hatred

The Beltway media seems enamored with conservatives promising to turn over a new leaf. No more demonizing gays, lay off contracpetion and reproductive rights for women, gosh we LOVE Latinos! There’s just one problem with that: even as conservatives praise diversity and intraparty glasnost on national TV, the usual creepy suspects are right back, hard at work, waging the War on Women and any other group they think they can bully for votes. I’d post numerous examples below, but the good folks at The Rachel Maddow Show did their usual cogent bang up job above.

This is not a branding problem, this is not a framing issue, it’s not a communication outreach failure — the GOP was crystal clear throughout the 2012 campaign season on who they hate and why they hate them. This is a structural dilemma codified straight in the party’s written platform that they cannot escape. Seriously Beltway gas bags, what exactly is it you think the GOP is gonna do? Because there’s already a political caucus that embraces equal and reproductive rights, welcomes diversity, accepts the findings of science, doesn’t shill non stop for the super rich and bang their war drums at every opportunuty. They’re called democrats.

To be honest, it might be nice if the Republicans were to transform into a party that “embraces equal and reproductive rights, welcomes diversity, accepts the findings of science, doesn’t shill non stop for the super rich and bang their war drums at every opportunity”. That would leave the Democrats to embrace true universal healthcare (including fully funded contraception and abortion on demand), fight poverty by mandating a minimum minimum wage and supporting labour rights, push for an equal rights amendment, redirect funds from the military to clean energy research and climate change mitigation, decriminalise and tax drugs, and open up immigration.

A look at US reactions to the latest war on Gaza, and the impending “Grand Bargain” to lacerate Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, leaves the last two clauses of your penultimate sentence very very very much in doubt.
