Open Thread
I’m doing some traveling and touristy things with grrlscientist today, on top of somehow coping with the first week of classes (physiology and our freshman seminar in biological principles), and attending Drinking Liberally at the 331 Club tonight. I also have to get tickets to the Prairie Home Companion show that will be taped here at UMM on 11 February…it all adds up to me being a little scattered and distracted and otherwise occupied for much of today. You all are just going to have to fend for yourselves for a bit.
Here is a short list of things I should write about, but won’t get to today.
- Jim Henley’s most excellent deconstruction of the argument for torture.
- Kip summarizes the brief against ‘precision bombing’.
- If you think Big Brother isn’t watching you, consult Glenn Greenwald.
- Al Gore’s glorious speech…that man ought to be president. Also read By Neddie Jingo’s summary.
- Ronald H. Pine summarizes ID in Intelligent Design or “No Model” Creationism: a Total Fraud and a Scam.
- Offering a Bible course in public schools: bad idea or useful inoculation? I have mixed feelings…at least they’re honest about it, which is more than we can say about creationists, but I’d rather see comparative religion taught.
- Scienta.net—an interesting collection of science articles.
- As always, you can make comments and suggestions about the new site. You may notice that I’ve tweaked the font and font size (if you don’t notice, reload the page, in case you’ve cached the old css file). There is interest at Seed in making the center column resizable. There are incompatibilities with Internet Explorer; some will be fixed, I think, others they’re going to throw up their hands and not worry about. Anything else we should patch up?
- I tried some of that new Black Cherry Vanilla Coke this week—I was surprised. I like it! And now I discover that all the cool kids are giving it a thumbs up, too.

I do have some Science!!! to write about, but first I have to clear up some time in an overloaded schedule.
