Behold, the Ugly Palace (il Palazzaccio, aka The Palace of Justice in Rome).

It’s nice to know we aren’t the only country that throws away money on hideous, grandiose buildings with terrible cost overruns and rumors of corruption. Of course, if it were built here, it would be excessively gilded, and would be a deathtrap.

Talk among yourselves about construction projects. Or whatever.

For years, President Trump’s new press secretary, Katie Zacharia, has publicly claimed she is a lawyer. […] It is quite clear now that Zacharia has never been licensed to practice law and is not a lawyer. But other questions remain unanswered. How did Zacharia act as general counsel for a California non-profit if she was not admitted to practice? Was the White House aware that she was not a lawyer before she was hired for the job?

NYT – Trump’s new press secretary: not-quite attorney at law

a watchdog group filed a complaint with the California State Bar Association, calling for an investigation into whether Ms. Zacharia “repeatedly held herself out to the public as entitled to practice law without a license to do so, conduct California law treats as a crime.”

And that brings us to China. […] On her LinkedIn profile, she listed nearly two years of employment at Zhong Lun Law Firm, which is one of China’s biggest […] Gary Gao, a partner at Zhong Lun who is based in Shanghai, said the firm often hired foreigners for language assistance and to help Chinese staff understand foreign business culture. “They are not practicing Chinese law at any time,” he said, adding that Ms. Zacharia’s role at the firm would have likely been similar to a paid internship.

And she’s caught in a disaster of her own making because she’s been padding her resume for decades and can’t come clean now. She’s got four separate stories to try to cover her bullshit, and it’s blown up in her face on her first day

Abortion, Every Day – Abortion ‘abolitionist’ joins the White House

new White House Press Secretary Katie Zacharia sat on the advisory board of an organization that calls for women who have abortions to be executed “in the public square,” and for pro-choice Americans to lose their right to hold public office. The White Rose Resistance (WRR), where Zacharia sat on the board until February, is best known for its anti-abortion disinformation, harassment campaigns against providers, and for collecting the country’s worst extremists.

The group’s national outreach director AJ Hurley, for example, was charged with felony stalking of an abortion provider in San Francisco in 2022. Per his own bio, Hurley is also connected to the woman who was found with multiple fetuses in her home. Good times. But to really understand WRR, you need to know its founder and leader Seth Gruber. Gillian Brockell (TAP, Flight tracker) on Oct 2:

This is a better epilogue to my January story about the private equity firm profiting off of ICE’s cruelest flights than I could have ever possibly hoped for.

CHICAGO: You went to the mat and protected (at a minimum!) thousands of immigrants from torture. Take a bow.

TheAmericanProspect – The city that brought down an ICE airline

the strategy of leveraging local government to penalize ICE’s business collaborators bore out this week in a way I could not have predicted, when Omni’s parent company announced it had spun off and sold the charter airline, in a rushed sale forced by progressive members of Chicago’s city council.
    […]
Their leverage came from an unlikely place, one of the worst privatization deals in history: the 2008 sale of Chicago’s parking meters to private equity. […] The day before the presidential election in 2024, [Omni] announced its sale to private equity firm Stonepeak Partners. The sale was finalized in April 2025. After the sale, Omni’s ICE flight charters nearly quadrupled […] Then, on June 17, […] progressive members of the city council were considering blocking Stonepeak’s purchase of the city’s parking meters because of its ownership of Omni.
    […]
The vote on the deal was repeatedly delayed because progressives made clear the council didn’t have the votes to approve it. […] Then, on September 15, came the big news: […] a new deal with Stonepeak. There were [parking meter] benefits for the city […] But it also forced the divestiture of Omni.
    […]
Some observers have reacted to the deal with skepticism […] let me repeat: The council’s four-month standoff likely stopped dozens of long-range ICE flights, and that matters, regardless of what happens next. But I also don’t think it’s a given that Omni goes back to business as usual. First off, they may not be able to in their weakened financial state; more importantly, every charter airline now knows the public is watching.

Omni’s planes are getting older—even the New England Patriots team jets it operates—and many of them appear to break down a lot. […] Now they’ll have to stand up their own maintenance and training outfits or pay market rates to contractors. Plus, scores of pilots and flight attendants have reportedly quit in recent months […] there were layoffs hitting every department on September 8. […]

And while we don’t know yet who is behind the holding company that bought Omni, it’s notable that Stonepeak was apparently unable to find another airline or private equity firm to buy it, at what must have been fire-sale prices. The increased public awareness of and disgust with ICE and removal flights may have made it too toxic an asset to acquire.

Stonepeak is the biggest company to cut ties, but it isn’t the only one. Three of ICE’s charter carriers have stopped doing ICE flights in the past year […] ICE may be flush with cash, but the list of private charter airlines willing to take it is short and shrinking. […] [DHS] has attempted to stand up its own “deportation fleet,” as I have been chronicling since February, but so far, it’s been a dark comedy of errors, with no actual removal flights […] they don’t have enough planes to replace the charter fleets. Not even close.
    […]
maybe the public can ground ICE flights one plane at a time, up until the day they can be abolished altogether.

We show that Discover-Tech ads were shown on devices in national-security-sensitive networks around the world. Numerous ministries of defense, armed forces, cyber agencies, intergovernmental orgs, multilateral security organizations, including NATO, the UN, and critical infrastructure.

[Articles: CitizenLab report and media coverage]

We refer to this type of attack as AdFection. […] First, Discover-Tech wins a bid, and one of their ads is pushed to a website or app that is open on a user’s device. […] When the website or app receives the ad, it renders it, requesting JavaScript from a Discover-Tech server embedded within the ad. In most cases, the user who sees the ad is not selected for targeting, and the server will not return any JavaScript to be executed. Nevertheless, the ad will still gather data from the user’s browser and submit it back to Discover-Tech, which can include cookies set on the webpage including the ad, as well as the device’s public IPv6 address.
    […]
Despite information about Discover-Tech’s links to figures in the spyware industry that could be readily obtained from a review of corporate records, major advertising industry organizations added the company to several lists of “certified” or “approved” ad vendors […] As a result of this investigation, both Google and IAB Europe removed Discover-Tech from their ad vendor registries in early October 2026.

One important issue in the legal proceedings is whether the administration has already made significant decisions about the scope and timeline of its East Potomac project. After National Park Service crews cut down hundreds of trees in the park on Oct. 10, a federal judge sharply rebuked the administration, ordered a halt to tree removal and demanded that officials explain who gave the order.

WaPo – Trump shares plan to overhaul East Potomac golf course (Oct 18)

Government attorneys have repeatedly emphasized in court that Trump’s broader redevelopment remained conceptual and that there was no final plan being implemented, while maintaining that the recent removal of hundreds of trees was a separate effort stemming from a years-old historic-landscape report.

Trump’s post appeared to move well beyond that characterization. It was not clear what the project would cost or how it would be funded.

Demonstrators marched across France on Saturday in massive protests drawing about 550,000 people, according to authorities while organisers put the turnout at 800,000. […] at least 2,400 arrests [over the weekend, some simply for being in the wrong place at the wrong time, others on suspicion of theft and looting.]

Sparked in high schools in France’s overseas territories and taken up by schools in under-served Parisian suburbs, student blockades quickly spread across the country in recent weeks, with students demanding more resources for education […] The movement morphed this weekend into national demonstrations with unions, student organisations and activists hoping to revitalize the Yellow Vests movement, which emerged in November 2018 in protest of fuel prices and the high cost of living.
    […]
the weekend’s protests showed how heavily armed the French police have become. […] there was a shift in national policy for crowd control in 2016 during the Nuit Debout (Up All Night) protest movement against proposed labour reforms, which came a year after the Charlie Hebdo terror attacks. That shift was further formalised in 2025 with a “National Urban Violence Scheme” which led to an overall harsher policing doctrine.
    […]
On Saturday, some protesters also looted multiple stores and set fire to buildings […] Macron also rejected Minister of the Interior Laurent Nunez’s offer of resignation, who said he “felt responsible for everything that happened”. […] Nunez admitted there had been a “lack of anticipation” on Saturday and that the approximately 60,000 law enforcement staff deployed that day had been insufficient […] Some northern cities introduced curfews
    […]
While it seems unlikely that the current doctrine of public order will be reexamined by the government given their recent statements, people in the French political sphere, particularly on the left, are increasingly calling it into question.

ProPublica – A few months into his second term, Trump DHS appointees asked their cybersecurity agency to secretly acquire a voting machine—and hack it

The proposition was shocking to CISA’s career staffers […] CISA typically worked to thwart hackers. Moreover, the agency had been directed not to alert the voting machine company if it uncovered flaws, contrary to its standard practices.
    […]
The CISA employees repeatedly told the political appointees that their request was impossible, in part because the agents capable of pulling off such an operation had just been laid off by [DOGE]. The appointees eventually stopped pressing CISA.
    […]
his administration has laid off or pushed out more than 1,000 CISA employees, shrinking the agency by about one-third. The president’s 2027 budget proposal would reduce funding for the agency by another $700 million, which could necessitate 900 additional layoffs.
    […]
Since Trump signed the CISA Act in 2018, the agency has worked with state authorities and voting machine vendors to help protect election infrastructure from cyberattacks. During Trump’s second term, though, CISA has abandoned much of this work. […] In recent months, in reviving debunked theories about the 2020 election, the Trump administration has declassified troves of records, including sensitive material that state officials provided to CISA. Some state authorities said they no longer trusted the administration enough to share information with CISA […] State leaders say they have used their own resources to shore up gaps left by CISA, such as paying for sensor technology that can detect unusual activity in election networks. But some services, like intel on foreign actors, can’t be replicated. […] When it came time for states to prepare for the 2026 midterms, CISA had disappeared.
    […]
Last May, an independent journalist named Brian Krebs exposed that CISA published private data, including passwords, cloud keys and other information, on its public GitHub page, in a folder labeled “Private-CISA.” A CISA spokesperson told the journalist there was no indication that sensitive data was compromised.
    […]
State officials said their planning will ensure a secure election, even without help from CISA. Yet they and cybersecurity experts worry that Trump will say the election was hacked if Republicans don’t win in November.

“They’ve violated the entire premise of that information-sharing relationship,” said one former high-ranking federal cybersecurity official who now advises state governments on national security. “There’s no fucking way they’re ever going to give any information to CISA. And it’s unclear if they ever will in the future.”

    Eiynah Mohammed-Smith (Polite Conversations):

Trump: New Mexico should immediately change its name to New America. We are not Mexico […] The name would add great value and prestige to the State! Home Values and Incomes would rise […] Maybe even the Crooked Elections, that New Mexico is known for, would become honest again!

Lmao… How are they still letting him run the country.

    Commentary

why not change the name of the country and make everything wonderful?

Laser focused on the issues 15 days from the midterms, sir!

I feel like Trump decided at some point to pretend he’s demented to get away with more stuff and then he just went and actually became demented and nobody noticed the transition.

All the places he wants to change the name of are actually Indigenous names. Gulf of Mexico, Lake Ontario, Denali, these aren’t just names from “other countries.” […] He’s not changing New York or New Hampshire.

    This is about Zorro ranch.

Just incredible to me that we put arguably the dumbest, most corrupt person in the country in charge of the nuclear codes because he’s an open racist who hates women and that is somehow a winning electoral strategy in America. Absolutely incredible.

    Owen Barcala (NM civil litigator):

The name of New Mexico is funny because it’s one of those things that you’d think is really simple (oh, it’s it used to be part of old Mexico, so we’ll call it New Mexico!), but it’s much more complex. New Mexico as the name for the area predates Mexico by several hundred years!

Mexico comes from the Nahuatl word Mēxihko, which is either the name for the valley where Tenōchtitlan was built or for the Aztec people who lived there (they debate which came first). After the Aztecs fell, the conquistadors moved north, looking for new rich cities to conquer—a new Mexico.

In 1598 the Spanish empire gave the expedition permission to settle in the Rio Grane Valley, and they established a colony they named Santa Fe de Nuevo Mexico, Holy Faith of New Mexico. The area now known as Mexico was then still called New Spain.

When New Spain declared independence in 1813, it was the Acta Solemne de la Declaración de Independencia de la América Septentrional, referring to itself as America in the North or Northern America. That was also in the 1821 Plan of Iguala that ratified, which refers to its people as Americans.

The monarchy that was established then started referring to itself as Imperio Mexico, the Mexican Empire, before the federal constitution in 1824 named it for the first time gave it name Estados Unido Mexicanos. So New Mexico predates Mexico as a state name for about 260 years. That strikes me as a much more American origin for a name than this trumped up nonsense

Rando 1: “the Mexicans calling themselves Americans before the Americans called themselves Americans”

Rando 2: “technically Mexico is also the United States.”

Mediaite – Trump sparks fury by reviving antisemitic trope at rally

Trump once again used the term “Shylock” […] more than a year after drawing condemnation for the same remark and insisting he had never heard that it carried antisemitic connotations. […] The term derives from the Jewish moneylender in William Shakespeare’s play The Merchant of Venice and has long been used as a derogatory stereotype associating Jews with greed and predatory lending. [*snip*]

Brendan Hartnett (Bulwark): The Republican Party is spending $100 million attacking Abdul El-Sayed and accusing him of being an antisemite. Trump, meanwhile, is just saying “Shylock” in his rally speech… once again…

Eric Columbus: “In 2014 Biden said ‘Shylock.’ The difference, of course, is that he apologized and didn’t do it again. [Politico article]”

CNN: ‘You Can See Everything’ becomes one of the biggest documentary releases in decades

“You Can See Everything” just saw the biggest box office opening for a documentary in more than 20 years.
Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim’s genre-bending film about disgraced Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes made more than $15 million in ticket sales.
Many weekend screenings in cities like New York and Los Angeles were sold out despite the three-hour running time.

The descriptions I have seen is that on one level it’s a straightforward documentary of Holmes, her instance she is innocent and what she goes through preparing for prison. The movie portraying her in a more human light while not buying into her innocence. On another level it’s a meta commentary on the documentary process and how Holmes is trying to generate sympathy with it. Parts are also a view of the personal connection and grift business in Silicon Valley. It’s apparently very good if you can stand the 3 hour running time.
