Episode 111: Goodbye Joey Ratz

joey_ratzCelebrate the end of Pope Benedict XVI’s short reign with a look back at the good, the bad and the ugly of the polemical pontiff’s career. We’ll discuss all the big questions you probably don’t care about: will Benedict still be ‘infallible’? What were the real reasons for his resignation? What will he do now? Who will be the next pope? Also, a brief history of Papal resignations before Benedict and we turn to Stephen Greenblatt’s book “The Swerve” for a surprising connection between a former Pope and the rebirth of humanism in the western world.

When he scored the top job, he probably hoped that he could do something wonderful that would cause his name to go down in history as one of the greatest popes of all time. In reality, however, he became known as the Rat in the Hat who protected child rapists from the law. Later, when he started feeling a bit off-colour, he probably thought to himself, “You know what, I’m fighting a losing battle here; why don’t I just give up? There’s no way I’m going to considered “great” so fuck it, let some other silly bugger have a go.”

    Goodbye Joey Ratz
Though I never liked you at all
You had the gall to hold your office
    While suff’ring children called

They crawled out of the woodwork
And they told you who you should blame
    You simply shuffled priests ’round
And you dared to change your name

And it seems to me you lived your life
Like an enabler on the take
    Never caring ’bout the evil
    For children’s sake

And the world would like to try you
    For helping pedo shills
Your papacy burned out long before
    Your damage ever will

First off, I love the podcast, been listening since the onset… I think you guys should do some Robert G Ingersoll literature for that new segment you want to produce. While he was not an atheist, rather an agnostic, his writings are fantastic. Not too many people talk about him today. He’s probably the best orator that people have never heard of.

FYI, your newer podcasts — because they’re undated — are showing up in alphabetical order on iTunes; that is, Episode 111 shows up right above Episode 11, and below Episode 12. You might want to take a look at this.

Old bigoted misogynist protector of pedophiles retires. Group of his peers meet, wear stupid clothes, and select a member of the same closed society as a replacement. But, since they used white smoke, people think it must be special.
Will anything change? Likely not. Abuse of children by priests will be considered wrong only as it influences the flow of money into the church’s coffers: no serious efforts will be taken to deal with the offenders (see increasing problems with them in Germany, despite the “no tolerance” smokescreen. Women will still be valued only as long as they are happy to serve as docile receptacles of semen and vessels for fetuses (only in marriage, of course: otherwise they are scum), but when they attempt to enter discussion of social, economic, or philosophical issues, they will be belittled and quieted, as always.

    Hi,

I am really interested if anyone knows of any good books or articles written by atheists about the Catholic Church especially the historical church. I’ve read a lot about the church from Christians that are against it but would like to see the opinion of atheist authors.

    Thank you.

I know this position is simplistic however I thought God chose his representative of earth. All this fuss and rigmarole seems to be a lot of mucking around for God where it involves votes and smoke and all sorts of stuff. Surely all powerful could be a little more efficient
