Arkansas Atheist Bus Ads Debut

Eighteen buses
Zero fusses
It shouldn’t seem so odd
Lots of plusses:
Sign discusses
“Are you good without God?”

Bus campaign
Makes it plain
Godless are people, too.
Nice refrain—
Not profane—
Probably overdue.

Federal law
In Arkansas
Allowed a large deposit
Some foresaw
A target’s draw
With atheists out of the closet

But eighteen buses
Zero fusses
It shouldn’t seem so odd
Lots of plusses:
Sign discusses
“Are you good without God?”

Story after the jump:

After a bit of dispute, with the Transit Authority and their ad company demanding a $36,000 security deposit (on the grounds that atheist ads tended to be vandalized), and the Central Arkansas Coalition of Reason pointing out that holding them responsible for the actions of those opposed to them was an undue burden not imposed on other groups, federal court split the baby in two and limited the security deposit to $15,000.

The buses and ads rolled out today. As of this writing, there has been no incident. It seems that Arkansans are good, so far.

I hope they get the security deposit back.

It still seems totally unconstitutional to give the hecklers veto so much power.

Hm. So the atheist group needs to put up a large security deposit. I can see it now – “People who don’t like atheists! Join me in vandalizing the bus ads so they won’t get their deposit back! We’ll basically be charging them more for the same ad space we can get for our group instead!”
