“This is a bona-fide culture war”

Another jerk who is still flailing away at Matt Taylor almost two weeks after his apology should have ended it.

.@RoyalAstroSoc Are you for progress or for regression? This is a bona-fide cutural war. @mggtTaylor

With the meme of Ayaan Hirsi Ali saying “I condemn whole-heartedly the trivial bullshit it is to go after a man who makes a scientific breakthrough and all that we as women — organized women — do is to fret about his shirt?”

So we get bashed for objecting to his shirt and then accepting his apology and moving on, but they keep endlessly ranting about our objections and even direct their ranting at Matt Taylor. They even send their spiteful trivial nonsense to the Royal Astronomical Society.

And we’re the ones engaging in trivial bullshit? Really?

YOU NEED TO LET THIS GO! YOU MADE A BIG DEAL OUT OF NOTHING, NOTHING I TELL YOU! CALM THE FUCK DOWN OR I SWEAR I’LL FUCKING SCREAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It’s a bare faced lie. Either that or I’m hallucinating as I’m sure I recall several excited posts here about the comet mission days before the shirt incident. Surely other prominent feminists with an interest in science did likewise.
In addition the shirt only gets mentioned on this side of the divide in response to the reactionaries when they bring it up.

Gosh Aryaan almost a fortnight after the landing and your lot are still banging on about the shirt criticism.

He’s right about one thing; there is a culture war. But this “battle” (skirmish? salvo? policing action?) was a minor one over a minor issue that “our side” considered over. If they want to keep fighting it… “please proceed”

    un…screechy? Inside voice, please O_O

@3 themann, this is the *perfect* issue for them – it’s irrelevant, but they can use it to make sensible discourse not only impossible, but demonized. Because “it’s just a *shirt*”, that means that NOTHING that demeans and marginalizes women can be commented upon, because “it’s just a squeeze” (she should view that as camaraderie), “it’s just a whistle” (she should feel flattered), “it’s just an invitation to his (bed)room for a drink” (yeah, he really DID mean JUST a drink – what’s WRONG with you people??), “it’s just all the men poking their heads out to watch her walk down the hallway” (again, she should feel flattered), “it’s just a joke” (don’t feminists have a sense of humor? Can’t you take a joke??) – and on and on AND ON it goes.

C’mon, girls – show us your tits! What? Aren’t you FEMINISTS?? That means you shouldn’t feel ashamed about burning your bras and going topless! C’mon now! Show us you’re REAL feminists!! Give us a show O_O

  8. says

Yes, all we do is fret about his shirt. We just happened to notice the shirt magically, because we weren’t watching this at all, especially not for the science. @@

after a man who makes a scientific breakthrough

Yeah, that one guy who “made a scientific breakthrough”. I think it is someone else who isn’t actually paying attention to the sciencey bits at all. (And seriously “scientific breakthrough” isn’t even descriptive of the event, never mind it sounds like marketing-speak for a weight loss scam or similar. It smells rather of the same sort of thinking behind such phrases as “missing link”.)

Apparently somebody didn’t realise that Nigel Tufnel was the butt of the joke…

Are you for progress or for regression?

Me? Progress. Sorry mate. But I appreciate the implication that being critical of sexist imagery and comments is regressive.

Btw, it may be that they’re tweeting at the Royal Astro-nomming Society because they came out with a statement of their own about the *crackly thunder* shirtstorm.

  11. ShowMetheData says

“all that we as women — organized women — do is to fret about his shirt?”

NO – it’s just one _more_ thing women can do
    – in addition to all the other stuff – added to the long list

… ok, so I managed to read your comment without spotting your nym… awesome. :3
And, ah… I’m not sure what went wrong there. The link is right, it’s just stuck on the end of this page’s address, rather than standing alone. Must’ve mangled the tag somehow? Thanks for the corrected link.

Oh don’t get me started on elevatorgate.* The guy really said, “Come to my bedroom where behind locked doors and no one expecting to see you for hours I’ll give you a drink in an open container.”

    * By which I mean do get me started.
