This doesn’t say much about the discernment of the movie-going public

This is dismal news, because they are both total crap.

‘DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE’ has surpassed ‘THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST’ to become the highest grossing R-rated film at the domestic box office. ‘THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST’ held the record for 20 years.

I’m sure movie executives are pleased, though. Let’s dive to the bottom!

    Deadpool may have a bigger gross, but The Passion is still the grossest.

    I haven’t seen it, I just can’t believe they’re making Jackman still play Wolverine 24 years on. X-D

    And I thought Roger Moore’s run as James Bond (1973 – 1985) was long.

    Actually would rate the Titanic movie above the others mentioned here..

    First, I find it hard to believe “The Passion of the Christ” set such a record, and kept it for 20 years through all the big-budget blockbuster movies that have come out since then. Are we sure that figure is accurate?

    Second, I also notice “Passion” kinda sank without much trace after its initial run. Maybe lots of Christians felt they had to go see it, and be seen seeing it by their neighbors, then quietly forgot about it afterword.

    And third, good for “D&W” for breaking that record — now I won’t have to spend any money of my own to make that happen.

    Clearly this means that the next big film will be a three-way team up between Deadpool, Wolverine and Jesus. Crossover films are all the rage these days, so bringing in half of America’s favourite fictional character to the franchise is just good business sense.

    I think the thing is that big-budget blockbusters tend not to be R-rated.

    Dunc @8: That’s exactly it. At some point in the 90s, studios began to realize that PG-13 movies had the best ticket sales since the whole family could go, so there was a serious shift away from R-rated films.

    Actually it does: Passion of the Christ was artificially inflated due to churches buying multiple tickets. Deadpool and Wolverine earned this on their own. That says plenty.

    I can’t wait for the climactic scene in which Jesus, having eschewed violence up to this point, faces off against whoever the big bad is and says, “Okay, that’s enough… now it’s clobberin’ time!”

    First of all, Wolverpool is an excellent movie, I can’t remember the last time I laughed so much at a film. Second, Jackman still playing Wolverine is a running joke throughout. Third, it takes zero prisoners, pulls zero punches and skewers everything about the MCU and superhero movies in general. It also takes some shots at post-apocalyptic epics, especially “Furiosa”. It doesn’t take itself seriously, has reverence for nothing, and I was surprised at how much vicious commentary they got away with. And it still manages to keep Vanessa as the beating heart of it all. This movie well earns its box office take.

    Poking around the free online streaming site Tubi a week or two ago I found out there is actually a film called Titanic II. The plot of the 2010 film is that someone builds a modern replica of the Titanic. Will it survive it’s maiden voyage? I’m not spoiling much by noting the answer is no. The few reviewers who saw it said the movie wasn’t good, but it wasn’t bad enough to be a fun watch.

    Jesus as Wolverine’s proto-mutant ancestor would work quite well. Maybe merge it with that Lupus sapiens stuff from the comics.

    Of course Jesus’ healing factor can’t really keep up with the other two, but since he can heal other people, you could have cartoonish mass bloodbath scenes without anyone perma-dying, which should be good for a laugh.

    I thought the only xtians who liked Passion of the Christ were the ones who were pretending or the ones who thought they were better than everyone else beause their faith was always a gory, offputting mess.
