“When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time.”
In what is clearly a more competitive contest than the GOP primary was, Trump has just emitted what is arguably his worst tweet yet. For anyone else, the word “arguably” would be unnecessary, but this is familiar territory for Trump.
We know him. With or without his tax returns, we have a decades-long record of bad behavior, of shady deals, cheap glitz, and self-promotion. He’s never seen these things as bugs; they have always been features.
Until he needs to broaden his base. Until he needs to “pivot”. Until he needs to polish that turd and make it presentable to the general public.
And yes, there are those who will happily vote for him–perhaps some of them honestly think he is a competent businessman, and a decent human–er, yuman being.
But anyone who has been paying attention already knows him (and if you have not, there are plenty of people ready, willing, and able to dredge up his record and display it for him). You can’t undo in a couple of months what you have spent decades building.
I know, the following verse was only posted just this past December, as the entire GOP field was trying to look like something it was not. But sometimes a verse finds its true calling when applied to something new.
They took a pile of dog shit,
And they mushed it in a mound,
Till it stood about two inches tall,
Nine inches wide, and round,
They let it sit a while,
Till it dried a little bit,
And it looked a bit like pastry
(Though it through and through was shit)
Then they covered it with frosting
So it seemed a proper cake—
If you hadn’t paid attention,
And you didn’t know it’s fake—
Then they took the pile of dog shit
And they put it on display
And they said “it looks delicious—
Won’t you try a bite today?”
Though the frosting looks delicious
I will never take a bite
I have seen the cake’s construction
And it simply isn’t right
They may tweak the presentation
(They will tweak and never quit)…
Dress it up the way you want to,
What you’re selling, though… is shit.
