Acid in the name of god

I think people who leave Islam should leave it for atheism, not for Christianity, but I also think people who do leave Islam for Christianity should not have acid thrown in their faces. Umar Mulinde, who used to be an Islamic teacher and is now a bishop of the Gospel Life Church International, had acid thrown in his face on December 24th. It destroyed one of his eyes.

From his hospital bed in Kampala, he told Compass that he was on his way back to the site for a party with the entire congregation and hundreds of new converts to Christianity when a man who claimed to be a Christian approached him. “I heard him say in a loud voice, ‘Pastor, pastor,’ and as I made a turn and looked at him, he poured the liquid onto my face as others poured more liquid on my back and then fled away shouting, ‘Allahu akbar,’” Mulinde said, still visibly traumatized two days after the assault.

As far as I can tell, Gospel Life Church International isn’t one of the Homophobia First sects that have been infesting Uganda, but I’m not sure about that. In any case, down with pouring acid on people.

Well, whatever his potty religious views may or may not happen to be, this is an unspeakable crime. Poor man, it’s difficult to know what to say, except rage and rage. So many religious people seem to think that they have a licence for any and every wickedness, even against each other. Especially against each other. But no, religion is the foundation of morality, of course. We are daily given proof of it. Bloody hell. Poor wretched bugger.

Gospel Life Church International isn’t one of the Homophobia First sects that have been infesting Uganda,

Just from the name, while they may not be among those openly crying “Kill the queers”, I’m guessing they’re not exactly what over here we call “Affirming”, either.

But acid-throwing is still an unspeakable crime, whomever the target. (OK, I’ll confess to harbouring an impulse to throw a few pints back at the throwers, but being a civilized and ethical human with my baser impulses under control, I never would even if I had the opportunity).

Yes, whatever views Mr. Mulinde may hold, nothing justifies throwing acid at someone. It takes a special brand of viciousness to attack someone with a method that will most likely not kill them, but will leave them horribly maimed for life.

This may be some sort of sophisticated-theological breakthrough – just about all previous reports of this tactic involve women as the sole victims.

    Gender egalitarianism ftw, Muslim-style… 😛

Yes; it’s absolutely horrible. I didn’t mean to say anything resembling “if his church is homophobic it’s just a tiny bit not so bad.” I didn’t mean to but I did. I should have separated the two better. I am curious about the church and the background – but that makes no difference whatever to the horribleness of the attack.

Imagine being someone who could do that – deliberately pour acid on someone. What is wrong with people.

    What is wrong with people.

Damn it all to hell, it’s their fucking GOD that’s wrong with people! Well, no, it’s more than that; it’s their pathetic little monstrous egotism that tells them that whatever they personally see must be true, obviously, and if their god can be “believed” into getting them what they want, it must be even truer. And when their fucking god demands what they cannot produce, some other bugger must pay. Like, if I cannot be chaste, it’s the fault of that woman, or that girl-child…And if some sod says “Bugger Islam, it’s a load of bull” then, god-almighty, he threatens everything that gives me comfort, so he has to pay: no pains in hell are sufficient to assuage my hatred. Truly Allah is merciful, compassionate.

Yes but it’s something wrong with them too. People who don’t have that something wrong with them just can’t bring themselves to do something like that.

But yes. The “love of god” can be hideously perverting.

Yes, that’s why I said “Well, no, it’s more than that; it’s their pathetic little monstrous egotism that tells them that whatever they personally see must be true, obviously”.
