Worshiping Lord’s Phallus!

Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Parvati worshipping Shiva’s linga or Shiva’s phallus.

It is believed that the linga of Shiva, cursed by the sages, fell on the earth and burnt everything before it like fire. Parvati, the wife of Lord Shiva, took the form of a yoni or vagina and calmed it by holding the linga in her yoni.’

According to the Hindu mythology:
‘During the great mythical churning of the ocean called Samudra Manthan, a pot of poison emerged from the ocean. The gods and the demons were terrified as it could destroy the entire world. When they ran to Shiva for help, he in order to protect the world, drank the deadly poison but held it in his throat instead of swallowing it. This turned his throat blue, and since then he came to be known as ‘Nilkantha’, the blue-throated one.’

The phallus symbol representing Shiva is called the lingam. It is usually made of granite, soapstone, quartz, marble or metal, and has a ‘yoni’ or vagina as its base representing the union of organs. Devotees circumambulate the lingam and worship it throughout the night. It is bathed every three hours with the 5 sacred offerings of a cow, called the ‘panchagavya’ – milk, sour milk, cow dung, cow urine, butter. Then the 5 foods of immortality – milk, clarified butter, curd, honey and sugar are placed before the lingam. Datura fruit and flower, though poisonous, are believed to be sacred to Shiva and thus offered to him.

Maha Shiva ratri is going to be celebrated tonight.

All through the day the devotees keep severe fast, chant the sacred Panchakshara mantra “Om Namah Shivaya”, make offerings of flowers and incense to the Lord amidst ringing of temple bells. They maintain long vigils during the night, keeping awake to listen to stories, hymns and songs. The fast is broken only the next morning, after the nightlong worship.

Shivratri is considered especially auspicious for women. Married women pray for the well being of their husbands and sons, while unmarried women pray for an ideal husband like Shiva, who is the spouse of Kali, Parvati and Durga.

Yoni Altar

Hindus not only worship penises, they worship vaginas too.
The erotic parts of Hindu mythology are fascinating but the truth is, like other religions, Hinduism is also a highly patriarchal religion. There are many rituals for women to pray for the well-being of their husbands and sons but there is no ritual for men to pray for the well-being of their wives and daughters.

“Man is made by his belief, as believe so he is”. So it depend upon the person what he/she believe in, no body is right and no body is wrong, its the way we look at the things around us ….what is good to us is bad for others and whatever bad for us may be good for others…., its only our point of view doesn’t match with our opponents..

  2. Animesh says

I am not so religious but I know little about this. What you mentioned here is not 100% true. You have made a mistake by saying Shiva’s Linga is the part of his genital. The explanation of the Shiva-Linga as a phallic emblem was brought forward by the most thoughtless, and was forthcoming in India in her most degraded times, those of the downfall of Buddhism. In fact the Shiva-Linga had its origin in the idea of the Yupa-Stambha or Skambha—the sacrificial post, idealized in Vedic ritual as the symbol of the Eternal Brahman.

    Dear Taslima,

Are you happy without embracing any religion and its faith. You have done enough harm to yourself along with our society. Man and woman are just born, nonody made them purposely. Either God or nature has made them to preserve this beaitiful world. There are many differences scientifically or otherwise. Please accept it. Mother Nature is great, please accept man and woman in their own form. Do not try to go against nature, it will definitely harm. In Hidu mythology Man and woman has equal rights. Lord shiva and Parvati had equal power too.
So forget all agony and embrace Islam your original religion, come to main stream society and enjoy life. Better say sorry to your countrymen for all you did wrong and go back to yoiur country and live happily over thre. Good wishes to you.

You are an ignorant, idiot, filthy religious fanatic. If you believe in women’s equal rights, you would not have misogynistic systems like sati, dowry, widow suffering etc. and you would not have continued raping, abusing, murdering children and women everyday.

HEY ! You both “Taru Datt” and “Taslima Nasreen are WHORES actually whose minds got corrupted.

First of all Hindu SEES God in everything as the manifested for our wellbeing and live close to us.

Secondly there is NO sati, dowry, widow suffering in India today. Instead, according to a survey more than 95% of Indian females gives FALSE rape and dowry cases against males by using all PARTIAL & RUBBISH laws of IPC (India Panel Code). They do all there to get money, attention, fame, and to take very bad and ill advantages of innocent males. Due to this, every day uncountable males commit Suicide in India. Even a survey shows the Suicide rate of male are more than twice than that of female…..

So first understand the truth and then say about our Hindu Pure Religion.

And by the way EVERY males of Indian, whoever our father, brother, friends and relatives should RAISE VOICE against such vomiting India IPC Partial Laws who bounds males to commit SUICIDE !

Neelam dear why do you want to degrade yourself arguing with ignorant.
Dear Tasleema and Taru please for your information Sati was introduced by the women themselves in order to save themselves from extreme humiliation they were caused in times of war when the opponent would win they would capture the women, girls small children . They were used as sex slaves. The queeens, sisters, and all the women folk were used a maidservants, by the opponent winner. To avoid humiliation of this kind for whole lifetime the woman were very devoted , self respective and chaste , that they themselves started this rituals. Which is not written in books in past 60 to 70 years because Congress was ruling. Before that British were ruling , before that Mogul period , and now also their are some places remote where they try to use this to their conveniences for inhuman greed and selfish, cruel gains where the property and materialistic gains.
Dowry systems also was not their , parents used to present the gifts Streedhan to the daughter as they were treated equal in the family and also for their future needs.
Slowly it the Grooms became greedy and easy means of becoming rich and fulfilling their materialistic desires. See the system was for good causes which was twisted and turned for benefits of some elements.

So please don’t blame Hindus for these systems, well even if you blame this is the truth. Rather than just condemning something try to find reasoning. You will be educated.

According to Vedas, reproduction is a sacred part of life when a purposeful couple wishes to create offspring. In past, the aim of life on earth was to serve the nature, beings and gain knowledge of the energy and vibration of the universe and embrace life. This is the tendency of God, being selfless and serving others. According to vedas, even stone has vibration and hence life and memory. Every particle has vibration and that is the force of the Source.
India was a country where many liberated sages and rishis llived and taught eternal truth. This was a culture across Asia and middle east. Not a religion. It taught Sanatana dharma, a practice common for all, irrespective of religion on race.
Today, this country’s acumen is manipulated by invaders and wrong education is given to children, to get enslaved to the rulers. Many illusions are created by media and by western education. To know one’s source and truth, one should meditate and merge with self. Knowing and loving self is knowing universe.

Dont go by what you see in media and read in books intellectually. Meditate and experience the self and know the truth. We all are being manipulated! You are the only authority of your life, and you are guided and protected by the light of the divine being in you. Make an attempt to connect to yourself.

        May peace be on all.

        Dear Taslima,

I appreciate your writing. But, seems an early conclusion. To me with my limited understanding, the shiva lingam is not about erotic intent of Hinduism. it is a symbol of balance between male and female. Every individual has a male and female in them. The balance between the counter parts opens up to God is the symbolic representation in a Shiva Lingam. However, hinduism doesn’t see sexual motives as a taboo. I hope you are still exploring about this subject.

Regarding the system of Sati, Dowry, Widow Suffering and most importantly the Caste-ism – these were misinterpreted from the Vedic history by some fanatics for their personal interests. It is not a standard custom of the religion, as seen today.

      • says

        Dear Taslima,

My sincere apologies for differing your thoughts

The sati, dowry, widow suffering are the aftermath of the Muslim invasion of the country as they were trying all possible opportunities to convert the hindus and no texts has mentioned any thing about the above beliefs as most of the girls were married early their husbands age was more so the males were either dying in war or due to some illness and to protect them from other muslims these things started as most of the hindus were peace loving and was not at war always for the sake of women ,as they kept women in very High Esteem
Sati was the call taken by the lady in subject unable to bear her husbands loss and fearing for her security later on also induced by forceful marriage to somebody of other Religion

Dowry is a recent Evil ,and our vedas also do not accept this, and the girls were treated as godess themselves

and of course we also condemn the heinous crimes on women in modern day world as it is happening due to the dis attachment from the cultural roots we had

and we say Sarve Janah sukhino Bhavanthu , ( Let all Human kind live in Peace and Prosperity)

        • Sri Vidya says

Sorry sir but putting it all on the back of the muslim is false & just discriminativ, this is not how you get peace.
I studued the Vedas fotr decades and all this practices, early marriage, dowry, sati rite etc… come from their, because at the begenning it happened in one story or the other with special people then it has become a tradition!
I know for shure that the muslim don’t ask a dowry for a girl, on the contrary they pay it to chose a wife.
And when the wife becomes a widow she has the right to marry again not to stay alone. Their prophete fisrt wife is an example and she was 20 yers older then her husban to whom she gave 4 daughnters and it was not shamefull!
The Bristish also did good to India by topping the sati rite, forced on young widows and others not willing to die just for the sake of a man who is not God after all. In the anciant times Manu the father of humanity gave this unjunction concerning women: that they should be protected by their fater in their childhood, by their husband in married life and by sons in old age or in widowhood. They where considered the pillars of an equilibrated and florishing society if well taken care from birth to death. now it’s the apposite, the father might kill his baby girl for a question of money (he could let her live & have a job…) the husband might burn his wife in a so called kichen accident because he did’nt get the TV set or the scooter with the dowry, and the son mignt thow his own mum out to beg when she is a widdow cause she is considered a bad luck…all this against the Vedas, maybe it should be taught in scools at the first place so that ignorant people don’t abuse women for so called evil traditions.India and all cultures have a treasure of knowlege to live in peace with all men, women, castes, or religions, if we accept that God is the source of all of them and don’t try to manipulate & cheat for power & money on His Name!!!

“You are an ignorant, idiot, filthy religious fanatic. If you believe in women’s equal rights, you would not have misogynistic systems like sati, dowry, widow suffering etc. and you would not have continued raping, abusing, murdering children and women everyday”

You what’s funny Taslima, everything you’ve stated has absolutely nothing to do with Vedic Religion. Looks like everyone needs a short ‘brush up’ on what the Vedic Religion is. The Vedic religion is based on three set of scriptures ‘Prasthana Traya’ -> Vedas (Rig, Sama, Yajur, Atharva), Upanisads, Vedanta Sutra (Summary of Upanisads). So in order for something to be authorised under the religion, they must have some sort of basis under these three groups of texts. So let’s examine Sati, Dowry & Woman’s equality.

Sati was a misinterpretation of Scripture (pretty sure it was from some purana, might be mistaken) and was abused by the Brahmins during their reign before Buddhism took over India. (If you want links on this i’m happy to provide it to you, but i insist you research it yourself)

Dowry was also a ‘Cultural Phenomenon’ and DID NOT appear in any Veda, Upanishad or Vedanta Sutra. IT did however appear in ‘Dharma Shastra’s like Manu Smriti, which is something analagous to Sharia Law. Dharma Shastra’s are human interpretations of scripture and therefore are influenced by time period, culture and context. If you want to use the ‘Dowry’ link to the Vedic Scripture, please provide a quote from any Veda, Upanishad or Vedanta Sutra. I will guarantee you that it ain’t there.

In term’s of woman’s rights, spirituality is the most empowering and free form of inner connection than any religion present on earth. Present day Hinduism is not the ‘Vedic Religion’, it is filled with supersition, cultural influences and misinterpreted quotes from puranas. Practices which have been ingrained are purely cultural and obviously do have some ‘Manipualted Religious Basis’ through things like Many Smrti. Therefore it is the onus of Hindus to really find out what is right and what their spiritual path REALLY IS. Buy a copy of Vedanta Sutra (Outlines the basic concepts of the Vedic Religion), do not read Bhagavad Gita just yet, it is very ambigious on some points. You should read Gita after the Vedanta Sutra, and it will make much more sense.

Finaly point is, i’m not a religious fanatic Taslima, but associating pure scripture with the acts of misguided individuals is not a reflection of scripture. It is a refleciton of the impurity of men. Pre-colonial india consisted of woman, who were often described to be walking through the street with little clothes to cover themselves, yet they felt empowered and comfortable, since men in those times werent the impulse driven animals they have become today. The Vedic Religion declares equality on the basis that whatever you may be: Man, Woman, Insect, Animal, Etc. All being’s have a soul, this is quite contrary to any Abrahamic Religion where animals do not have a soul whatsoever.

The Vedic Religion advocates the conquering of qualities such as Greed, Anger etc. and declares Lust to be the foremost quality to lose. A true follower of the Vedic Religion does not see the difference of a man and woman, but only the presence of a soul. I know this sounds insane, but it is to that level that Vedantists aspire, that is the depth of the Vedic Religion. We do not require burqas, hoods, etc. We recognize that the problem lies in the mind, you may have a naked lady in front of you, but it is you that has to control your mind. I won’t write anymore, but hopefully everyone here understands the true scope of the Vedic Religion, it is leagues ahead of any other religion or cult institution, it is the definition of spirituality and self reflection.

I respect woman and i am a Hindu. No religion is bad but the people are good or bad or a people of particular region are good or bad not because of religion but because of lack of education, morality, character, or because of shortage of daily needs fulfillment like food, shelter and other stuff.

Muslim girls dream to marry a Hindu guy because they know that Hindu males are respectful to their spouse and they are faithful to them and even in the worst case they don’t bring four wives at home and believe me these are not my thoughts, but told to me by Muslim girls during my school and graduation time.

i want to maintain one thing, no religion is bad , you never learned from history and still want to make it worst.

god is love ……………..where hate exist………..god leaves that place……!!

The founder of Islam is Prophet Muhammad, and thus Islam is a one-man made religion. Prophet Muhammad declared himself as the last prophet of God. It is very important to understand the actions of Prophet Muhammad to understand the Islamic mentality.
Prophet Muhammad was married, marrying more than 20 times after the age of 50 to young girls and he was involved in wars.
His marriages included marrying the 6 year old Aisha (his brother’s daughter) when he was 51. Women taken captive in war, including the 17 year old, Safiyyah, when he was 54 and the 20 year old Juwairiya, when he was 58. He even married his son’s wife.
“That the Prophet married her when she was six years old and he consummated his marriage when she was nine years old, and then she remained with him for nine years (i.e. till his death).” (Sahih Bukhari: Volume 7, Book 62, Number 64)
The above means Prophet Muhammad was 54 and she was only 9 when he started having sex with her.
“Muhammad selected Safiyyah because of her beauty, made her his wife and gave a banquet at the wedding; then he had sex with Saffiyah at Sa`d-AsSahba..” (Sahih Bukhari 4.52.143)
Safiyyah was a married woman who’s husband was killed by Prophet Muhammad’s men and he took her captive and married her. For the winning side to take the wives of enemies killed in war is considered righteous by Islamic standards.
“O Prophet! We have made lawful to you the wives to whom you have given their dowers; and those ladies whom your right hands possess (from the prisoners of war) whom Allah has assigned to you..” (Koran 33:50)\

I am not here for any religion but If god tell you something you should take it in his meaning not in your meaning.

        And About Shiva Lingam

In Sanskrit, Linga means a ‘mark’ or a symbol, which points to an inference. Thus the Shiva Linga is a symbol of Lord Shiva – a mark that reminds of the Omnipotent Lord, which is formless.

Shiva Linga speaks to the devotee in the unmistakable language of silence, and it is only the outward symbol of the formless being, Lord Shiva, who is the undying soul seated in the chambers of your heart, who is your in-dweller, your innermost self or ‘Atman,’ and who is identical with the supreme ‘Brahman.’

anyway the topic was rather Penis worship by monkey-faced hindus and not Prophet Muhammad. I won’t refute or correct your copy-paste research from the Zionist propaganda material about Muhammad and Islam. Even Zionists know in secrecy about the truths and are converting.
Leave that aside, lets talk about incest and child marriage and sati and gang rapes and female foeticide killings and small penises of the cursed Hindu and the prevalent AIDS in the uncircumcised Hindus and Draupadi practising Polyandry with real brothers(pathetic) and worshipping Penis with your children and pollution during Diwali and polluting Ganga with barbecued dead.. the list may go on. Plenty of worms in your ass, find a real man to pull them out.
Krishna incest with his sister Subhadra and even shared with his elder bro Balram.
Shiva and Vishnu had gay sex and the craziness doesn’t end here they bear a child Ayappa.
Brahma performed incest with his daughter.
Agni is the son of his father and his sister.. wow.
Parvati deserts the phallus of Shiva and opts for the phallus of her son Ganesha who happens to be an elephant. Elephant penis.. wild thought.
The list can go on… I am sure dude you have more knowledge.. do the courtesy of adding more instances.

    Dear Taslima,
On the one hand your observations about the condition of women is true and are reflected in the crime statistics. It is deplorable and something that rather should not happen.

But for you to base your observations that they have root in religion is not correct. Infact the story that you have written about Mahashivratri above is factually incorrect, it is no different than any common place written stories.
Shiv-lingam has nothing to do with the Shiva’s phallus, the representation Shiva-linga is just the representation of Shiva whose nature has no beginning and no end and is generous and bholenath (the simple one); On Maha-shivratri it is not just Shiv Panchakshara mantra that is chanted, but Rudram-Chamkam, Shiv mahimna amongst others.

    As far as Hindus treating women is concerned, I am the one who does the fast on Shivratri and not my wife;
and there are many like me who do so, you may quote examples of everything wrong and curse Hinduism but for every tragedy that you quote, there are 1000 others who respect/revere and love our mothers/daughters/wife.

You also mention Sati, for your information Sati was abolished by Raja Ram Mohan Roy in 19th Century and is not practiced anymore. Additionally the practice of Sati had its roots in Jauhar that wives of Rajput rulers did to escape the rape/mutilation/humiliation at the hands of Muslim invaders who did incredible damage to Hindu religion and Indian Culture.

You want to highlight all that is bad sure do, but cursing religion has no end and is not fair. My knowledge of hinduism never told me all what you say so conveniently state in your writings. You are a writer of decent repute that comes with responsibility towards your readers.

    Hi Tasleema,

There are two types of people:

    1. Responsible ones:

These are the people who are part of a group and take responsibility for the failures, as individuals and as a member of a group. They not only take responsibility, they also take charge. They take corrective action and keep taking action till the goal is reached. They don’t blame others, they blame themselves.

    2. Irresponsible ones

These are the people who are not part of any group. They believe that their existence is a privilege for the society. They only criticize because they don’t know what else do. They’re not part of a solution, they are the problem.

    Which group you belong to?

Do you believe that the society exists as two categories of humans, male and female? Male the oppressors and female the oppressed? People don’t become oppressed or oppressors because of their gender. It’s their thought and action.

Your article title “Worshiping Lord’s Phallus! ” is as offensive as your intention of categorization – “Patriarchy, Religion” Don’t try to pretend that you know anything about them. Second, your language is not of any mature human being, you write like a child who is ever eager to jump to a quarrel.

How do people treat offensive drains or quarrelsome people?

“You are an ignorant, idiot, filthy religious fanatic. If you believe in women’s equal rights, you would not have misogynistic systems like sati, dowry, widow suffering etc. and you would not have continued raping, abusing, murdering children and women everyday.” 🙂

The real challenge for you is to first understand that who created all these wrongs you see all around. who is responsible? The answer is not what you think- “MEN!”

Then, answer to yourself, “what are you doing to reduce the suffering of the society?”

Don’t be a complainer, you’re better than that.

  10. Amit says

You are just another “typical” frustrated being, full of negative energy that you have nowhere else to spend than on mindlessly denigrating beliefs and cultures. Now, to blow you out of the water, Shiva linga is an aniconic representation of the Force that creates the universe. Get you facts right before venturing to write articles publicly.

Shiva and shivling have more to do with race than religion,in any case religion is always secondry to race.Shiva is the dravidian god,Vishnu is the caucasian god, taslima,as i understand bangla region should be closest to mongoloid race.Mongoloids prefer buddha or christ or in case of west bengal, the rebel fiery durga, doing a parallel of dassehra by way of durga puja, defying mainstream hinduism.

  13. Saurabh says

People, truth is truth, it dosn’t need a scientist to observe Shivalinga is a penis and vagina in union, and for that matter you can also see a sperm floating in it. Also, we call it Shiv-Linga, don’t we? You can keep defending the religion, keep doing things which were designed for entirely different times, that doesn’t take you ahead. Times have changed and relevance too. Having a shivlanga in temple also means that Hinduism is a broad thinking religion, and shivlinga is a visual representation of male and female union, it’s a lesson in equality of sexes. If you keep being ignorant about it, you will never get the message right. It’s important that we start being more open as a society, respect women and provide them safety. Praying to women goddesses like Durga, Kali, Sarsavati and harassing women at home doesn’t go good together.

  14. Amit says

Saurabh, it does not need one to be a rocket scientist to know about what Shiv-ling means but it does take some brains and some research, which an eager monkey like you obviously lacks.

      To (stupid) Kabeer Khan:-

      I find it amusing!

However, it proves a very important point! Muslim keep their women supressed and under strictness, so much so that they cant befriend/marry males of other faiths. In Hindus (the ‘prjudiced’ list you have displayed with so much arrogance and pride, all married some celebrity. Celebrities, under the effect of their popularity and money ARE the CHOICE of many a females who enjoy liberty and freedom, much saught after by the Muslim girls. No wonder they marry these guys for their money or status. Moreover, many Muslims just marry and divorce. Rina Roy, Amrita Singh and others are examples. You already mentioned the divorcee of Amir Khan. Also, the mafia don Abu Salem’s wife is too a divorcee. So that proves yet another point that Muslim
males are untruthful and less caring for their wifes whom they marry under the wish of their Allah.

Also, it is common to see (may be numbers are less) to see Muslim girls married to Hindus. So please shed some of your ego and divert your stupid, biased mindset. Try and open up your females and consider them to be human beings.

  17. Vijay Paul Gupta says

Vaishnavs and Shaivism were hostile to each other. the Vaishnas are more powerful in India. They control the English narrative. Both sects used to defame each other. What armchair experts like yourself and the horrendously clueless, in fact amusungly clueless, Wendy Doeineger (sp?) have swallowed and puked out is the Vaishnav defamation of Shaivism and Shaktism from the PUranic Era. the Vaishnav narrative is also the upper caste narrative, a justification for their divine rights.

    • Aries says

The decline of Hinduism, I think, started in the Puranic Era where innumerable incidents from various ‘kalpas’ were narrated and manuscript-ed to MAKE the follower of the various manifestations of the supreme ‘paramatman’. Both Shaiv and Vaishnav never shun away each other’s deity and neither did undermined. However, they put their own deity to an upper level. The fools (as there is never a dearth of them) and the selfish ‘priests’ for their ego and supremacy (and financial gains) got a ‘point’ to keep an upper hand over others, and that brought tension to the ‘common’ man who never studied any scriptures or authoritative discourses, and were dependent upon the priest class for their understanding of the religion. Later, with Manusmriti and its illogical interpretation, further decline was inevitable, giving rise to suppression of lower casts and declaring Brahmins as the super beings of all times.

  18. Social Recluse says

    To all muhammad fanatics
When we say that we worship God, we worship Him whole, including His phallus. It is better to worship His phallus than to worship some imaginary god who selected a pedophile, tribal womanizer and a killer ‘prophet’ to ‘spread his words’. Period.

  19. Furqan says

    Dear Social Recluse ,
    Quran 10:018
“They serve, besides God, things that hurt them not nor profit them, and they say: “These are our
intercessors with God.” Say: “Do ye indeed inform God of something He knows not, in the heavens
or on earth? Glory to Him! and far is He above the partners they ascribe (to Him)!””

    Quran 16.020-21
“Those whom they invoke besides God create nothing and are themselves created. (They are things)
dead, lifeless: nor do they know when they will be raised up”

“Do the Unbelievers think that they can take My servants as protectors besides Me? Verily We have
prepared Hell for the Unbelievers for (their) entertainment”

“Say: “Call on those – besides Him – whom you fancy: they have neither the power to remove your
troubles from you nor to change them.” Those whom they call upon do desire (for themselves)
means of access to their Lord which of those who are nearest and they hope for His Mercy and fear
His Wrath: for the Wrath of thy Lord is something to take heed of”

“Quran17.056-57 – “Say: “Call on those – besides Him – whom you fancy: they have neither the power to remove your
troubles from you nor to change them.” Those whom they call upon do desire (for themselves)” —
Oh yeah? And allah has all the powers and so he didn’t allow his ‘last prophet’ who was so dear to him, to even have a peaceful death!

  20. kaustav says

Tasleema ,every year more and more Hindus are worshiping the God of Gods Shiva. The Symbol or linga he is prayed as, is sex organ to animal standard minds and has various interpretations based on spiritual level of people.u have lot of time and if u browse authentic sites, u will come to know from the birth of human, shiva linga is prayed and even the modern scientists perseve or relate the symbol to some way or other.ultimately, to all – animals and humans Shiva is the creator- creator in form of sex organs-how can u forget that all of us including u were born becoz of these organs- or creator /destroyer and regenerator of all moving, unmoving and every particle of universe.
Enlighten yourself and grow your mind beyond sex and sexist activist.

  21. Vidya Gopidas says

Miss Thaslima,i believe that lord shiv, jesus and allah is one.but if you are saying that Hindus worships vagina then may i know what Muslims are worshiping in great madina??

  22. says

she replies to silly comments , but remains totally silent, and ignores when there is a logical meaning given

Shiva aspect stands for atmic consciousness, that permeates all creation, and in the heart of all beings. Shakti stands for the inert prakriti or nature. A union of this consciousness and inert nature gives birth to all creation including the physical and mental worlds, our maaya, awareness and bliss. This union of consciousness and nature aspects is “symbolised” (remember linga means a symbol too) by two concentric circles depicting these two aspects of Divinity, conjoined in a geometric egg like shape, in one continuous harmony of unity. Shiv linga is also spoken of as the cosmic seed of creation.

Let me also add, that it may also be, – but is rendered irrelevant due to todays moral prejudices- that in the past the same creativity was also seen to be symbolised in the act of conjugation. But this symbolism today carries unnecessary negative moral baggage, that has been unfortunately much polluted by cultures that couldnt see sex as more than an act of pleasure and women as more than objects of use for sensal pleasure and progeny. Such male dominated cultures installed traditions to inhibit women, put veils on them, instead of attempting to correct their own mental and sensual pollution. Vedic researchers in ancient times,, instead -focused on spiritual research with much work on internal self control of thoughts, instincts and impulses, while placing woman at the highest point of respect. Sex was as holy an act as any other natural acts that exists in creation. Why should there be a and bad in a natural act? ( Do we see process of multiplication of amoeba as immoral, and some of its parts more sacred than other?) The trouble truly lies in our own prejudices and outlook.

In this light, symbolism of lingam and yoni that you critique, too may have equally sacred foundations. But like I said, todays moral biases turn this symbolism as irrelevant to the objective of depicting creation with highest holiness.

Brother, you will never be able to convince all of the purity at the heart of these depictions. Spirituality is best exercised individually. Ignore, the ignorance, till someone asks for assistence in humility.

What truly matters is as follows…

“Just as OM is the ‘sound symbol’ of God, the Linga is ‘form symbol’ or visible symbol of God – the most meaningful, the simplest and the least endowed with appendages of attributes. The Linga means, that in which this Jagat (world of change) attains Laya or mergence or dissolution (Leeyate). All forms merge in the Formless at last. Shiva is the Principle of Destruction of all names and forms, of all entities and individuals. So, the Linga is the simplest sign of emergence and mergence.”

  23. hinduwoman says

I really don’t understand why so many Hindus become defensive about the linga unless they think sex is something shameful

We see the yoni holding the linga in place so that from this union new life is created. It can be interpreted in poetic spiritual ways but this is the absolute basic from which these interpretations come. Our ancestors understood very well the vitality and need of kama.

  24. says

    Hari OM!!!

I am a devotee of lord shiva, I just want to clarify that Shiva is the supreme God where everything emanates and dissolves too. As far as shiva linga is concerned, it is a symbolic representation of jyoti sthambha ( knowledge pillar ). On the other side there is no discrimination between shiva and parvati. Both are one.

In fact, there are many shrines for Goddess Draupadi, spread in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. One of the shrines, where She is a Grama-Devatha and Kula-Devatha to many, is located in one of the small villages of Tamil Nadu.

The village is named KONDAL, Mayiladuthurai Taluk, Nagapattinam District, Nidur P.O, Tamil Nadu.
