That put the fear of God into me

This government is clearly planning to put boots on the ground in Iran. They’re declaring that it is Jesus/Trump’s will to launch Armageddon now.

A combat-unit commander told non-commissioned officers at a briefing Monday that the Iran war is part of God’s plan and that Pres. Donald Trump was “anointed by Jesus to light the signal fire in Iran to cause Armageddon and mark his return to Earth,” according to a complaint by a non-commissioned officer.

From Saturday morning through Monday night, more than 110 similar complaints about commanders in every branch of the military had been logged by the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF).

The complaints came from more than 40 different units spread across at least 30 military installations, the MRFF told me Monday night.

When our military leaders start using apocalyptic language at the start of a war, worry.

“This morning our commander opened up the combat readiness status briefing by urging us to not be “afraid” as to what is happening with our combat operations in Iran right now. He urged us to tell our troops that this was “all part of God’s divine plan” and he specifically referenced numerous citations out of the Book of Revelation referring to Armageddon and the imminent return of Jesus Christ. He said that “President Trump has been anointed by Jesus to light the signal fire in Iran to cause Armageddon and mark his return to Earth.”

— MRFF active duty NCO client, writing on behalf of themself and 15 other unit members

Let’s hope that this doesn’t happen and that we aren’t sifting through the ashes looking for something to eat next week. And if it doesn’t happen, every single one of these goddamn bible-thumping murderous commanders must be dismissed and drummed out of the military in disgrace.

While we’re at it, can we also get the names of all the White House personnel who are currently lining up to put inside bets on the date of the invasion on Polymarket? They need to be jailed or executed, too.

This behavior and/or belief is standard for Republicans. Remember James Watt (Interior Secretary under Ronald Fucking Reagan) who pushed the “Wise Use” idea to use up the environment before the end of the world, which was per Watt close at hand.

Every stressful moment causes this sort of craziness to start leaking out. Remember 9/11? People who claim that the establishment/general public aren’t THAT crazy need to pay attention!

Annoying shortage of details. Was this a company commander, a brigade commander, or what? How many independent events are represented by these 200 complaints? How far up the chain of command does this go? I mean, it clearly is represented at the top, i.e. the “Secretary of War”, but one can hope it’s not ubiquitous below that.

IMO, a land war invasion of Iran would be very dumb and might well end the Trump reign of terror.

Iran is a large country with a large population at 93 million.
The general rule is that an attacking army needs to have 3 times as much military power as the defenders. This is because an invasion favors the defenders.
Ask the Russians and Ukrainians how that works.

We fought the North Vietnamese in Asia in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The population of North Vietnam at that time was around 20 million. We had a population of 200 million and a much larger economy.
    And, we lost.

This isn’t anything hard to figure out.
We lost in Vietnam because the Vietnamese didn’t have anywhere else to go.
They lived there and it isn’t like they could just retreat or go home and take a break.
The US on the other hand, always had the option of getting on a plane and flying from Saigon to California or Hawaii. Which is what we ended up doing.

Without any clear message coming from the White House with regard to the purpose of the Iran war, U.S. military commanders have turned to Jesus, apparently telling American troops that the war is “biblically sanctioned.”

Monday evening, the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, or MRFF, was “inundated” with complaints, receiving more than 110 grievances from U.S. military personnel stationed at dozens of sites across the Middle East, reported independent journalist Jonathan Larsen.

Hegseth has parroted the views of Douglas Wilson, a conservative theologian who advocated for Christian dominance over government and society. He has followed through in practice, instating regular prayer services at America’s military headquarters. He also entered office with several Christian symbols already emblazoned on his skin—a Jerusalem cross and the phrase “Deus vult”—in what Hegseth has described as emblems of the “modern-day American Christian crusade.”

Whenever we have one of these wars, I always get nervous and it brings back bad memories.

I knew people killed in Vietnam.
One was my friend’s father. Her mother was pregnant at the time.

Two of my friends were killed in Iraq.
    They are still dead.

So, who do I know who will be killed in this war?
At this point, it probably won’t be anyone I personally know.
We are now working on killing our children and grandchildren.

John Harshman @#3 — You’re right that there’s not much detail about the scope of this claim. The more officers and the higher the rank, the more worrisome it will be. And of course, Dumb Don has Messianic delusions.

Hey! Maybe we could tell him we have to nail him to a cross to fulfill the prophesy.

whywhywhy @ #10 — That book is nuts particularly out of context as some Christians use it. If you put it in the context of Jewish/Christian events in the 1st/2nd century CE, it makes a little more sense…the series of revolutions against the Romans, the harsh suppression of those revolts, the destruction and looting of the so-called “Second Temple” and so forth. And don’t fail to consider the two centuries of political turmoil in Judea beginning with the so called Hasmoneans. Things were a little nuts in the Levant beginning perhaps with the invasion of the Greeks, but certainly by the introduction of the Romans. I suspect this period represented a fairly significant cultural shift and conflict different from previous conflicts with regional power entities like the Egyptians and Babylonians.

Here’s a third party view that looks at Mehta’s claims, looks at Weinstein’s claims, and kinda leaves one (or at least me) wondering. It was linked by Mehta in a Bluesky post.

    https://thedebrief.org/questions-mount-over-viral-claims-of-apocalyptic-iran-war-briefings-in-the-military/

On Weinstein’s side there’s this about the alleged similarity of the emails:

Additionally, Weinstein pushed back on Mehta’s concerns regarding similarities among written complaints, telling The Debrief these are likely due to the organization providing service members with examples to work from.

  19. John Morales says

Looks like your mind is made up already then.

    Made up about what?
That I found Hemant to be wishy-washy and not very cluey?
That the story is not so incredible?
That his claim that the commander in question in that specific email should be named, thus vitiating the anonymity request from the NCO?

Sure. Until and unless new information becomes available, that is my opinion.

That noted, your insinuation that I think it’s a veridical claim and that my “mind is made up” is not something I stated and certainly not warranted.

In passing, from the article I adduced earlier, this is the USA Defense secretary:

In his 2016 memoir, In the Arena, Hegseth says he relates to an online image of a triumphant ISIS fighter — a Quran in one hand, an AK-47 in the other: “With God on his side and the wind at his back, he is a conquering warrior,” Hegseth writes. “He is fighting for something greater than himself. He is fighting for his God.” In this photo, Hegseth sees a warped version of himself. “I recognize that fighter, even though I’ve never met him. I am drawn to him because I relate to him,” he writes. “I deplore what he stands for, what he does and how he does it. He is a soldier of hate, subjugation and sheer evil. But I understand his passions.”

Since his 2021 resignation from the military, Hegseth has increasingly turned to his other tribe, Christianity. Two years ago, he moved his family from New Jersey to Tennessee, where Hegseth joined a school and church associated with reformed reconstructionism, an ideology helmed by the far-right theologian Doug Wilson.

A bit of a contrast to your adduced piece:

In an email exchange with The Debrief, Mehta explained some of his criticisms, noting that Weinstein has produced emails several times in the past alleging religious misconduct on military bases. However, Mehta points to consistencies in the manner in which many of these complaints are worded, which also tend to praise Weinstein as being a sole source of hope for these beleaguered service members. To Mehta, this is suggestive that many of these communications could have been written by a single individual.

Additionally, he notes that while Pete Hegseth and his pastor, Doug Wilson, may hold objectionable views to some, this sort of apocalyptic interest in Israel is not specifically present among them. While Mehta concedes that some fundamentalist Christians do hold such views, Wilson’s form of Christian Nationalism is something different: it espouses an ideology that aims to dominate the country for Christ, rather than usher in his literal return on a tide of blood in the Middle East.

    From my adduced article:

On the Red Pill podcast, Hegseth said another factor was his realization that both politics and culture were downstream from religion, and that he should “start at the source.” He’s taken his own directive literally, making a series of trips in recent years to Israel, which exposed him to another pitched Middle East conflict that he views in sacred terms. It was on one of these trips, Hegseth writes, where he first spotted the Jerusalem Cross and later tattooed it on his chest “to show that my religion is front and center in my life.”

  20. Hemidactylus says

    John Morales @23
Yeah. I have no idea why a Christian would make trips to Israel, where Jesus himself is said to hail from.

The Jerusalem Cross proves a lot here that’s damning to Mehta I’m sure.

Christian Nationalist nutter goes to Israel and gets a Jerusalem Cross tattoo. Ok. Not confirmation bias at all.

  21. John Morales says

Sure. He’s a typical Christian, who regularly visits Israel.
Typically, Christians are all about war and crusading and tattoo themselves with warlike symbols after visiting Israel.
    Nothing to see here.

Here: “Additionally, he [Hemanant] notes that while Pete Hegseth and his pastor, Doug Wilson, may hold objectionable views to some, this sort of apocalyptic interest in Israel is not specifically present among them.”
This is the guy who literally compares himself to a Jihadist and had a Crusader cross tattooed after visiting Israel.
    Who leads the military.

The Honorable Pete Hegseth is the secretary of war. He was sworn in on Jan. 25, 2025, as the 29th secretary of defense before the department’s name was changed

    Here, for you:

“It got me thinking about another miracle I hope all of you don’t see as too far away. 1917 was a miracle, 1948 was a miracle, 1967 was a miracle, 2017, the declaration of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel was a miracle, and there’s no reason why the miracle of the reestablishment of the Temple on the Temple Mount is not possible. I don’t know how it would happen, you don’t know how it would happen, but I know that it could happen, that’s all I know,” he said.

“A step in that process is the recognition that facts and activities on the ground truly matter. That’s why going to visit Judea and Samaria, understanding that the very sovereignty over Israeli soil, cities, locations, is a critical next step to showing the world that this is the land for Jews, and the land of Israel,” Hegseth concluded.

You’re aware that dispensationalist Christian theology posits that a physical Third Temple must be built in Jerusalem as a fulfillment of biblical prophecy prior to the return of Jesus Christ, no?

Perhaps it’s not the case that leadership affects organisational culture, so his Crusading aspirations are not propagated or encourage such talk from people down the chain. Such as commanders speaking to NCOs.

Sure, that very specific claim may be hyperbole, but the pattern is clear as could be.
Which, again, is why it’s so credible and went viral.

  25. John Morales says

Truly a specialist, Birger — from the transcript of your video:

And the last factor that is very important is the eschatological factor. If you look at the Epstein files, it’s clear that we are run by secret societies. It’s clear that the world is run by individuals who have a lot of power. We don’t know who they are, but they control the military, they control the national‑security apparatus. There are different names for these people — you can call them the Illuminati. And the Illuminati are composed of three major groups: the Jesuits, who control the Vatican; the Sabbatean‑Frankists, who control modern Israel; and the Freemasons, who control the national‑security apparatus of the United States. They believe that this war in the Middle East is key to the end times and to creating heaven on earth. So it’s almost like a script they’re following, even though it doesn’t make any sense.

So I would say these three are the best reasons why this is happening.

I didn’t find the claims of xian cultists in the military rambling on about the Apocalypse not believable. They do this often anyway.
I tried to check it with Google.
A lot of news sources are carrying this story.

    The Guardian:

The Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF) says it has received more than 200 complaints from service members across all branches of the armed forces, including the marines, air force and space force.

One complainant, identified as a noncommissioned officer (NCO) in a unit that could be deployed “at any moment to join” operations against Iran, told MRFF in a complaint viewed by the Guardian that their commander had “urged us to tell our troops that this was ‘all part of God’s divine plan’ and he specifically referenced numerous citations out of the Book of Revelation referring to Armageddon and the imminent return of Jesus Christ”.
    and
In response to a request for comment on the complaints, the Pentagon did not reply, instead sharing public clips of Hegseth discussing the operation in Iran.

It all traces back to Mikey Weinstein and the MRFF. Other reporters have seen the complaints.

As Weinstein points out, your commanding officer isn’t like your shift supervisor at Starbucks. The soldiers really aren’t free to complain about their commander, even if he is a crazy person.

That was my first thought, what the fuck is God doing he is if not paying attention to us? Maybe God, with all his mighty power, could just take out these evil Iranians with one of his magic fire and brimstone stunts just like he did to Sodom and Gomorrah. Now that I think of it, God only does stuff like that when he needs to test us. All the suffering that comes from war must be part of God’s plan. Guess we just have to go into WWIII to signal God it is time to end humanities reign.

Am sure the more sensible part of the military is thinking along the lines of commando raids and similar short-duration land attacks, not anything lie a full scale ground invasion. For one thing they haven’t moved even close to enough troops into the area to being to contemplate holding anything bigger than a patch of desert in a spot isolated enough even the Iranians never go there. What we’ve got in the area is more along the lines of what you would expect to defend friendly bases in non-hostile countries against Iranian commando raids.
