If I impulsively set up a Google+ hangout at 8pm my time (in about an hour), would anyone join it? I might try it anyway, just because. To talk about whatever.
Absolutely nothing of any significance was said. We just had a pleasant evening of social chit-chat.
melody says
I have been wanting to do one of these with you. I wish I had known in advance. I’m in my PJs with my wet hair in a towel.
stephenduggan says
Can’t sleep
Will be there will bells on :)
PZ Myers says
What’s wrong with PJs and a towel?
markmcglone says
I thought those hangouts could only have ten people at a time.
danarel says
damn, I just got home, really bummed I missed out on this.
PZ Myers says
You haven’t missed out! Not starting for 15 minutes.
danarel says
awesome!
stephenduggan says
Have black pudding on and a pot of tea on the boil….
melody says
Next time let me know. I wanna hang… and not look totally ridiculous.
Nerd of Redhead, Dances OM Trolls says
Can’t attend. Got laundry, dinner, and no mircrophone….
John Morales says
melody, you can just do the audio.
(I can think of at least one low-tech solution to disabling video… ;) )
la tricoteuse says
Oh boo. Would so be up for this another time, but bed beckons.
Nerd of Redhead, Dances OM Trolls says
Dang, I might have a USB microphone from an earlier voice recognition entry I purchased for the Redhead. Is there a generic driver, and where did I leave it? (In a bag in a box at the bottom of the closet, IIRC, manana.)
Courtney Hammett says
Tell me how this works, please :P I’m not good at the internets
Matt G says
How does one join?
SallyStrange says
Yeah, what’s up, is this happening?
benjaminlash says
Need to be G+ friends or something?
SallyStrange says
I am on G+. and friends with PZ, I think. If anyone else wants to friend me, it’s sallylichtenstein707 at.
Quirkythrope says
Damnity damn, checked my feed too late to get into this. And I just got a G+ account and everything..
angle says
Is it too late for this?
theophontes (坏蛋) says
Hah! John Morales is a sockpuppet of the mighty 3M Corporation!!!!!elebenty!!@!
chadwickjones says
Guess I missed it… :-(
mobius says
Ah…I used Google to find Google + and the Myers Hangout. It’s about 9:30 Central time, so I’m guessing it’s over by now. Sorry I missed it. I’ll have to figure out how to get registered and try to make the next one (assuming there will be a next one, since it looks like the conversation went well.)
Take care everyone.
rorschach says
Some of us have to work!!
Btw, if your posts had a time of publishing again(and not just date), it would be easier to tell when stuff is happening…
Skatje Myers says
You should pop into existing hangouts on G+ more, like Ed does. Or you should invite your daughter to the next one, jeez. D:<
joshfisher says
Glad I made it to at least part of the hangout. Next time I’ll come by with more to say!
P.S.: My wife just told me that our cat peed in my babyseat hat this morning.
PZ Myers says
Ed told me you are always on way past my bedtime.
I suppose I could add you to one of mine, but you know us boring old folk.
John Morales says
[OT]
rorschach, hover your mouse over the post date — the alt-text is specific.
rorschach says
Ah, I see. Not exactly obvious, is it?
ChasCPeterson says
Thanks, John! I didn’t know that either, and I went looking in vain for a post-time just recently.
SallyStrange says
That was rather fun. :)
SallyStrange says
The book of folk songs I was talking about is called “The Child Ballads,” so called for the man who collected them, Francis James Child.
http://www.npr.org/2013/04/20/177997065/not-for-kids-these-child-ballads-are-steeped-in-history
That’s the NPR report. It focuses on how different generations of performers continue to use the book as a source for adaptations. “Scarborough Fair” was adapted from Child’s Ballads.
The book is hundreds of years old, and was intended to be a literary source for scholars. Thus, Child did not record the melodies, but only the words, and always several different versions of the lyrics. This makes it a source ripe for reinvention and interpretation.
Anais Mitchell is one of the younger performers featured in the report; she’s released a new album with this other guy, Jefferson Hamer, whom I don’t know.
Robby Bensinger says
The author Haley mentioned at the start of the video is Virginia Valian. She does really important and eye-opening work, and is, simply put, the reason I’m a feminist today.
Here’s an example of her work : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FtvV6Bot28Y . I really think this needs to be popularized a whooole lot more. Among atheists, and among human beings. It may seem slightly dry at first, but there is some amazing theoretical work and data here that I think gets pretty close to the heart of the problem feminists face, in a straightforward and accessible manner.
SallyStrange says
Robby –
I’m checking out that video, and indeed, it is very good! Thank you for the recommendation.
rorschach says
“You’re older than my parents”. I LOL’d. The ultimate insult..:-)
mobius says
I like the idea of the Hangout. Could you be a little less impulsive the next time and give us a bit of little more lead time. Say 24 hours. Or even 12.
Or not. Just saying.
PZ Myers says
OK, I’ll do it again Monday night at 9 my time. Maybe with a more focused theme.
Loqi says
The topic of hot wings was not investigated thoroughly enough. It warrants more discussion.
ChasCPeterson says
yeah, “The Book of Children’s Songs” was prety close.
I kid.
pixelfish says
Is it sad that made me happy because it was the most I’d ever seen a group of guys all together on the subject?
(Cuz even in friendly groups like my old roleplaying group or whatnot, it was often hard to discuss that without apologetics or jokiness getting in the way….)
pixelfish says
Whoops. Somehow this got posted to the thread below the Snappy One Liners. Sorry.
David Marjanović says
*howwwwwwwwwwwl*
PZ, I need more advance warning! Time zones and stuff! And lack of webcam and G+ account!
