Pope Francis calls for civil union laws for same-sex couples

The pontiff’s remarks came in a new documentary and were quoted by the Catholic News Agency. They represent his clearest stance to date on a contentious issue inside the Roman Catholic Church.

Before we get too excited, civil unions are not the same as marriage. And I’m sure I don’t need to remind anyone reading here that “separate but equal” is a demonstrably terrible policy.

Still, the Catholic Church’s support of same-sex couples in committed relationships is a big deal, even if it’s only one tiny step. Whether we like it or not (NOT), the church holds tremendous political and social power, and this is especially true in Central and South America. This tiny step toward acceptance has the potential to influence entire societies steeped in Catholic bigotry, and can positively impact the lives of countless non-heterosexual people.

No word from the pontiff on whether women might be considered three-fifths human anytime soon.

I gave up being a Catholic as a teenager, I still find it difficult to comprehend that adults believe that crap.

While I welcome this as well, I also have to ask:
Will catholic adoption and foster agencies begin placing children with couples in “civil unions”?
Will catholic hospitals recognize the rights of civil partners over homophobic family members?

I suspect not. And I’m entirely certain that the church won’t start accepting those civil unions as valid and that they won’t stop considering gay people inherently disordered.

When someone at his position sort of starts admitting women should be in charge of their bodies I’ll accept the title as appropriate.

My mother was a catholic who was excommunicated because she married my father who was not a catholic. In 1946 she gave birth to her first son but the child was still born. The hospital was a catholic one so of course they sent a priest to comfort her. In her pain and grief she asked the priest if her child would go to heaven. He told her that since the child was still born and never had a chance to know jesus it would reside for eternity in limbo. My mother told me this story when I was 14 in 1969. That pretty much was the end of my search for a god. My mother is going to be 94 and still cries about her son who wont be in heaven with her when she dies. Sorry for this (not really) but fuck the catholic church.

As an X-catlick I still think the pope is PoS!!! He is a bigot as there is nothing wrong with MARRIAGE for everyone!!! Marriage is another word/activity that has been hijacked by the religious. Any religious bigot who does not want a LBGT marriage is welcome to shut up and not get one!!!! To heaven for all of the bigots, I’ll be in hell!
