Yay Vermont!

Vermont is the next state to legalize gay marriage, and the first do to so through the legislature instead of the courts. It was a big win too. “The vote was 23-5 to override in the state Senate and 100-49 to override in the House. Under Vermont law, two-thirds of each chamber had to vote for override.” Vermont’s not quite as much of a shock as Iowa, but still great nonetheless!

I really hope we see a snowball effect, with more and more states allowing gay marriage. I wonder if we can thank Prop 8 for getting the rest of the nation worked up enough to do something about it. Would be an ironic, lovely twist.

I hate to be Grammar McNaziPants, but “legalize gay marriage” is a phrase that really irks me. There’s nothing illegal about two dudes or two chicks having a wonderful marriage ceremony, complete with exchanges of vows and a priest and a cake with two grooms or two brides on it, and all the other attendant frills. The state merely won’t recognize it. “Recognize gay marriage” would be my phrase of choice. But, feel free to ignore my anal retentive bitching, as the important bit here is the good news. It’s time to send angry letters to my state legislators in Springfield, I suppose.

Hooray for sanity. Sadly I live in the wonderful state of Utah where the current state legislature will never “Recognize gay marriage”. I thinking people who do support it are going to have to sneak some people into state government.
