I am also scared, Sir, scared of getting killed. But what else can I do? It’s better to die rather than living by keeping my head down.
Nazzimudin Samad , 26 was a law student attending evening classes at Jaganath University, Dhaka the capital city of Bangladesh. He was returning from his classes with his friends when unknown assailants hacked him to death chanting Allah hu Akbar (God is great) . The killers left the scene firing gun shots into air.
Samad was an activist both off and online, vocal against Islamic fundamentalism. Though he was a member of a youth organisation supporting the ruling party, the Awami league, he was critical of the Government’s failure in curbing Islamist violence. In his Facebook page he identified himself as not religious.
When a friend warned him about the danger to his life he replied as quoted above.
He is the sixth freethinker activist to be murdered in Bangladesh by Islamists in last 2 years. All were killed similarly, hacked to death.
Why they were killed ?
Most probably because that is the prescribed punishment in Islam to those who “wage war” against God and his messenger, and freethought and atheism is according to Islamists a war against their irrational beliefs.
Indeed, the penalty for those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger and strive upon earth [to cause] corruption is none but that they be killed or crucified or that their hands and feet be cut off from opposite sides or that they be exiled from the land. That is for them a disgrace in this world; and for them in the Hereafter is a great punishment Quran 5:33

They never choose “or they be exiled from the land.”
