Well, I get that this has something to do with an incident a coupla years back that showed just how heinous too many in the atheist community are, but I have to say I honestly don’t get this. If I was only now looking into what the atheist community was about, I almost certainly would have been turned away from the overwhelming amount of toxic bullshit and proliferation of assholes both deliberate and accidental – something this picture is a good illustration of – within it. I’ve been to a couple of atheist conferences, but there’s no way in hell I’d go near another one if it wasn’t explicitly anti-asshole.
I can’t make out what the shirts say in that picture. I don’t think I ran in to them at SK6 to have noticed either. But the elevator line is easy to make out. So that makes it pretty easy to guess which is more likely to be noticed and ruffle feathers.
Apparently Chas is claiming on Twitter it’s a joke about the ‘well crafted elevator sign’ instead of Rebecca? Sure reads as sarcasm, though I don’t think I get the point.
I can’t make out the lettering on the shirts either (and if I increase the size it just blurs), but people who can tell me it says Slimepitter.

Chas – you and Damion (the fellow on the right, for those who don’t know) are surely being needlessly provocative here? Even if you believe you’re on the side of the right (which I’m not conceding), this is a simple playground barb. And it’s too soon to be ironic about either the Slymepit, or Elevatorgate, though I don’t think that’s what you were intending. In short, there’s no chance that this can raise the level of discourse, and there’s no chance that – if your interpretation of history, or position on how people should respond to it, is correct – that this will result in changing anyone’s mind in favour of your view.

It doesn’t really matter whether you get the joke, if there is one. That isn’t the point. It’s a bunch of passive-aggressive people trivializing the fallout resulting from a woman suggesting that it’s fairly creepy to follow someone into a hotel lift at 4am and proposition them for… oh, let’s say coffee.
Well… ‘fallout’ isn’t the right word, is it? It’s not a natural process, it’s getting on for 3 years of deliberate hatred, horribleness and lies. Lots of people have said awful, awful things for exactly no reason other than to silence uppity women and make people – mostly uppity women – feel bad. A handful of horrible people have come close to making a fucking industry out of it. Many others have tacitly or explicitly supported them in their efforts to increase the amount of shittiness in the world.
The people pictured are examples. They’re saying that the elevator incident was trivial. They’re saying that the horrible threats and the determined campaigns against people in the years following the incident are trivial. But more than that, they’re dismissing the plight of women who suffer from sexual harassment or prejudice in general. They’re saying that those women are taking their experiences out of proportion and there’s really nothing for them to be upset about. They’re saying that abuse is something that just happens at conferences and in the world in general and that women shouldn’t go to conferences or outside their houses if they don’t want to be abused. And they shouldn’t tell anyone if they are abused. And that if they don’t bring charges against their abusers then it either didn’t happen or they asked for it.
It’s a lot to read into a picture of some smirking wankers underneath a sign saying “elevator”, but have I got it about right?

Jacque, i appreciate your criticisms and charity. The Slymepit shirts were a dare and honestly, hardly anyone even noticed. It helped show me that these battle lines are not being honored or noticed by everybody. I do regret mentioning the elevator in my tweet and should have anticipated this reaction.

It was better than having a bunch of random folks milling about in the background. Yes, there were plenty of walls, but this was closest and free.

I do remember someone remarking that we looked as though we were posing for an album cover photo but we can blame the woman next to Damion for that because she’s a celebrated singer and her charisma rubbed off on to us.

It is pretty clear that the photographer framed the picture to include the elevator sign – you can’t see the faces clearly. The wall also has all sorts of unsightly outlet covers, etc., that could have easily been cropped out by moving closer to the subjects of the photo (that is, if the people were the subjects, and not the sign).

I’d have to agree with #66 joant about how the picture was taken. It’s a great shot of the “Elevator” sign, not so much of the people in the picture. If this was just a group picture of the people, why include what looks like 3 feet of space above their heads? If this picture was all about them wearing their “Slimepitter” shirts, why did they take such an awful picture of it?

I have no history of hating Watson. A couple months ago I complimented her directly on twitter for her “this day in skepticism” segment because it was about a woman scientist I’d never heard of. And the night before I drunkenly tweeted that she was overly gracious to the waitress she nearly collided in to (Watson claimed all the fault but I didn’t think either were at fault). And on our podcast and YouTube page, Damion and I both declared unequivocally that Watson said nothing wrong in that infamous video.
So you say I have a history that helped you determine that I an a “liar, idiot Chas-hole” but you haven’t spent the time to actually find out what my personal stances are. All you saw was Slymepitter or “other” and turned your brains off.

All I saw was a photo of an elevator sign with four out-of-focus people smirking underneath it. It’s not about pattern recognition regarding your life Chas, it’s the content, focus and caption of a single photo that you seem inordinately proud of.

So yeah, I’ll judge the book by its cover. And you’re posing for it even if you’d have written something else entirely, the narrative was laid out long before you posed for the photograph.

The entire reason for the existence of the Slimepit was and remains the mocking and harassment of Watson and feminism in general. So yes, when you choose to declare your affiliation with a group, it is reasonable to assume that you share that group’s purpose. If I’m talking to a self-described Roman Catholic, I’m confident in assuming that they believe that a Jewish carpenter said a lot of flowery language, got nailed to a piece of wood and then bounced back three days later because hey, Son of God (and also God, assuming they’ve actually bothered to learn the full doctrine of the Trinity).
Now, there may be some Catholics out there who in fact don’t believe the Incarnation and Resurrection happened, but if they want people to know that, it’s incumbent upon them to put forward that fact. You, on the other hand, not only wore the identifying shirt, but ALSO indulged in the whole elevator nonsense.
We aren’t overlooking evidence, here; we’re weighing it carefully, and treating it accordingly. The evidence of your testimony of intent is weighed against your actual conduct and group identity. If someone from Answers In Genesis tells me that God spoke to him personally, and that He said that it really was a seven-day creation, I’m allowed to be skeptical about that testimony.
My head jerked around a bit when I walked past someone wearing a “Slimepitter” T-shirt. I’d known at least one ‘Pitter was present at Skepticon, as Damion looked to be tweeting from the event, but to have the gall to proudly represent a group that has done more to drive people away from the atheism and skeptical movements than any other is just… wow. Way to prove you’re assholes, guys. At least the Christian protesters were respectful enough to stay outside.

@freemage I would estimate that the reason for the Slymepit is because it allows nearly absolute freedom from moderation. Especially since this was the ethos over at Abbie Smith’s comment section which was a thing before Elevatorgate and moderation seems to be the one official no-no (though it gets damn rough if you propose a dissenting view on Watson or Myers because most people in that forum have a knee jerk reaction towards those figures).
So maybe the better analogy would be to ask that Catholic if they believe that they are actually eating the flesh and drinking the blood of Jesus when they take part in the Eucharist than whether or not they believe that Christ was Christ. And, I imagine that you will learn that many Catholics don’t believe think they are literally eating and drinking Jesus.
No, the reason for the slime pit is not because it allows nearly absolute freedom from moderation. It’s because it attracts people who obsessively hate six or seven feminist atheist bloggers. It attracts them because it’s a place where they can share and discuss and recirculate their obsessive hatred with similar others.

Yes. I would make the same accusation. Ophelia’s original post did not single anyone out. It was Chas’s desire to show up and offer what can only be described as a shockingly glib defense of his actions that have brought the focus on to him.
If the other two folks are trying the same lame defense, it doesn’t improve with numbers.

Notice that you changed the wording. doubtthat said “a shockingly glib defense of his actions” and you changed that to defending yourself – as if from an assault.
You’ve been flippant at best and evasive at worst. You could do better, I assume, but you seem to prefer not to.
It’s really quite amazing. chasstewart must think the people here are as stupid as he is. First he gives an untruthful explanation of how he and Damion just happened to be standing directly under an elevator sign. Then when it’s obvious that nobody here is buying that nonsense, he tries to rewrite the origins of the Slymepit.

Bah, SallyStrange @99 said the exact same thing I wanted to say. I’ll just add that it’s trivially easy to find evidence of editing, and I know of one commenter who got their posts deleted and themselves banned. They remove spam posts and block spam bots, too.
Moderation doesn’t have to be top-down, either. I remember spotting a comment from Oolon somewhere on the network where he accidentally discovered his posts were being blocked by other users on the Slyme Pit; once he set up a new account to get around a technical glitch, people complained they could see his posts again. I can’t find a link at the moment, sadly.
So what makes the SlymePit so attractive is not the lack of moderation, which is demonstrably false, but the lack of moderation against hate speech.
So, a recap:
Chas showed up here voluntarily and managed, via his own words, to create a situation where the only two explanations for that photo are:
(a) he’s an ignorant, credulous, easily-led buffoon with no appreciation or understanding of the vile and sustained fallout from That Video (i.e. “it was the best spot for the photo and I didn’t realise the charged nature of the huge all-caps word above the subjects’ heads or its relationship to the word on their t-shirts! Honest!”) even as he claims that he found nothing wrong with said video or…
(b) he’s a flat-out, unapologetic, deadpan, lying little troll.
Further to my 108, I’m going to take the more charitable route and assume that Chas is fully aware of everything that picture conveys. Therefore it’s (b): he’s a lying sack of trollshit playing up to the dudebro chuckleheads.
Honestly, calling him as clueless and ignorant as situation (a) would imply would be a pretty grievous insult. Why, that’d make him as stupid as he must think we are.

@hjhornbeck, you are absolutely right, apparently adding people who post on the pit to your kill file is not moderation. Even when the mod/admin on the pit threatened to shun one of the other members of the pit for responding to me (When I was only arguing about misogynistic words, not taking the piss at all, well hardly!) that was not considered moderation. Steersman is on lots of peoples kill files for going against the prevailing hate of feminist opinion from time to time (He was unique in being the only dissenter when I was reading the pit over a year ago, might be different now). I think when I left I was on pretty much everyone’s kill file, as evidenced by the universal whining when I had to post using a guest account that cannot be kill filed … But none of this is “moderation” as they can still post to the forum and have no one see or read their opinions. Shunning of people with different opinions is fine on the Slymepit, but don’t “moderate” them or you’ll be like the “Baboons”!
LOL’ing at Chas’s half arsed lies about the photo. Even if I extended him the courtesy of believing that the photographer was an unwitting participant in an accidental happenstance. What stopped him cropping the photo to something more reasonable given the stated aim of the picture was to highlight the people and t-shirts? He knew the picture was fortuitous (Assuming it was) for a particular reason, and chose to keep it like that, for a particular reason. That reason being the ability to play up to the nasty harassers on Twitter and the pit. Cos a woman getting years of abuse over a comment about an elevator is hilarious.
SCENE: A hallway, in which two men are walking along in opposite directions talking on their phones, each oblivious to the other’s presence. The men are identical.
STUNT: The two men crash into one another, and drop their identical phones. They each pick one up, and try continuing the conversation.
MAN 1: “Right, so like I was saying, it was totally innocent, and in fact I love Rebecca Watson and fluffy bunnies and I’m a totally easygoing dude who’s being brutally persecuted for a misunderstanding!”
MAN 2: “Hahaha, did you see that Twitpic I sent? Sick, yeah? Fuckin-a, totally ragged that bitch out.”
SOUND FX: Faint noises of outrage on both phones
MAN 1: “Crap, dude, you got your malice in my stupidity!”
MAN 2: “Yeah, well, you got your disingenuousness in my LULZ-seeking!”
They walk away, arguing.

@Oolon I posted this on my phone during the drive home from Skepticon. I don’t usually take the time to crop photos so I just posted it. Twitter is more of a stream-of-consciousness effort for me.
Chas, lest you’ve forgotten, you posted the photo with the comment “It’s a very nice elevator at Skepticon.”
Why? If that’s not a snide reference to Elevatorgate, why did you say it? Are you an aficionado of elevators? Is the quality of elevators something you comment on as a matter of course?
Chas lies about the origin of the Slimepit, and can’t explain why it’s mean-spirited to make an Elevatorgate joke, but not to wear a Slimepit t-shirt.
I suppose, in order to justify why it’s not just as mean-spirited to wear a Slimepit t-shirt, he’d have to first stop lying about the origins of the Slimepit.
