Good luck in Somalia

A woman in Somalia said she was raped by some security forces, so she has been given a year in jail “for making a false accusation and insulting a government body.”

Judge Ahmed Aden Farah said the woman would not go to jail immediately as she is caring for a young child.

How very generous.

The woman had reported the alleged rape at a police station in Hodan, a district in Mogadishu where many displaced people live.

“We sentence her for offending state institutions by claiming she was raped,” the AFP news agency quotes the judge as saying.

“She will spend one year in prison after finishing the breastfeeding of her baby.”

State institutions in Somalia sure are easily offended, aren’t they.

Last month, the UN special representative on sexual violence, Zainab Hawa Bangura, said the Somali government’s approach to the case did not “serve the interest of justice; it only serves to criminalise victims and undermine freedom
of expression for the press”.

Well the woman can consider herself lucky she wasn’t stoned to death. Aisha Ibrahim Duhulow was.

I don’t get it. What was the prosecution’s evidence, and why did the court disallow the defence’s evidence?

The new government is trying to rebuild Somalia after more than 20 years of conflict which saw clan-based warlords, rival politicians and Islamist militants battle for control of the country.

Is this meant to be some sort of excuse? Or what?

So, this “government” pokes its head out to imprison a woman who was raped? By “security forces” whose sole apparent function was to rape a woman? Because neither of these entities has done any other fucking thing in recent memory, to the point that I wasn’t sure they even existed.

Part of me doesn’t want to believe this happened.

Another part is going, “well, it’s Somalia… what did you expect?” (Yeah, I know there’s a lot wrong with this reaction.)

And a third part is just raging incoherently at the sheer injustice of not only being raped, but having the courage to report it (especially in that part of the world!) only to be arrested for doing so.

I think I’m going to lie down for a bit.

She’s probably just an hysterical femi-Nazi who completely blew the incident out of proportion. And now she’s on a witch hunt. She probably needs to be kicked in the cunt. Because there’s no evidence that she was even on that elevator. She’s a slut who’s so ugly she can’t even get laid.

    Yeah…right. Let’s go with that.

Typical. Women are always making up phony rape allegations so that they can get free room and board for a year.

Not only was she found guilty, but so was the reporter who published the story.

It is just terrible all the way around.
