Wow. I’ve been checking the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for updates on Malala every day, and the update has always said just that she continues to make progress. It now seems that they were understating it a little. She’s been able to talk since Wednesday, and they seem much more confident now that there’s no brain damage. All signs of infection are gone, she’s walking with very little help, and her short term memory is fine. Dr Dave Rosser talks to the press:

HOLY SHIT! Ignore my depressing comment on your previous post! Oh man! Theswe kinds of things SO rarely goes in this direction.. Better… or more specifically alot better. I know a shitty little ‘boys-club’ what better watch it’s collective ass.
Usually these extended media silences mean bad news.

I am SO proud of that young lady! She’s tougher, smarter, and all round put together better than all her attackers combined. She’s a shining star and I’m so excited to hear how well she’s recovering! I can’t wait to see her grow up and what she has in store for us!

Heard earlier (on BBC radio) that Malala has also asked for her books, presumably so she could get back to studying.
Suddenly I had one of those little moments where I recognised my own privilege. At her age I was more likely to be avoiding homework or occasionally bunking off school.

Great news! The usual followup to the vague “…making good progress…” seems to be “…will suffer serious long-term sequelae….”, but this sounds much more encouraging.

The astonishing power of medical science. (And I thought it was amazing when they saved Rep. Giffords last year…no brain damage?!) It appears a bullet to the head is now a treatable condition. Go humans!
Do you suppose they’ll have to grant Malala and her whole family asylum somewhere else at this point?
