Whew, Manchester is a good city. I’m back from the second whirlwind tour of the day – went inside the Town Hall (couldn’t before because there were guys hanging from ropes above the door fastening a banner advertising Irish Days [going on in Albert Square] so the door was blocked to the public), marveled at how unlike Seattle’s equivalent it is.
Went around the John Rylands library.
Happened on and went into the People’s History Museum. Went halfway across a bridge over the Irwell to Salford. Went halfway across a graceful pedestrian bridge ditto.
Happened to notice a dome not far away, went to see what it was, found the Barton Arcade.
And more. All in a couple of hours.
I like Manchester.

It’s quite a nice city. Sorry I couldn’t be there for the conference this weekend.

I must be getting hair-trigger in my old age. First, the headline made me think it was about some outrage upon history recently committed by Dave Barton, then the phrase “guys hanging from ropes above the door [of Town Hall]” triggered a “WTF? I thought Britain did away with public hangings ages ago!” before I read the rest of the sentence.

I’ve been to the UK several times, but never to Manchester yet. Some day.

I’ve always wanted to pay a visit to the Alan Turing monument there. (See also a dog frustrated that Turing won’t play ball.)

It’s kinda nice to get an outsider’s view of cities I take for granted – I live an hour and a half away on train from Manchester and I only go up for shopping; predominantly Afflecks Palace and China Town. I do recommend Afflecks Palace if you’re into alternative and vintage stores. And China Town just for the food
