Welcome to America?

It is common to hear Americans describe the countries of central and south America as fraught with gang violence compared to the safety of US. But this sketch from the show Alternatino shows that things are not that simple.

Yeah… going by the 2024 UNODC stats via ‘Our World in Data’, the U.S. Homicide rate was 5.8 per 100,000 population. While that’s better than most of the Americas (Jamaica is the worst at 49.3/100,000, and the average of the Americas as a whole is listed at 14.4), it’s still worse than Argentina and Cuba at 4.5, and Bolivia at 4.4, and not much better than Bermuda, Chile, Suriname, and Paraguay at 6.2, 6.3, 6.5, and 6.8 respectively. So, better than most, but not by as much as they’d like to think.

(Canada comes out the best at 2.0/100,000, but it was inherently excluded by the ‘countries of Central and South America’ phrasing.)

Or, put another way, the phrasing was carefully chosen so Canada wouldn’t make everywhere else look such a #shithole by comparison.

Any way you can provide a transcript (as I believe PZ Myers tends to do) of this video?

    Richard @#3,

If you click on the settings icon (the little gear wheel at the bottom right) you can select the subtitles option.
