Reason’s Greetings!

Best wishes to all the blog’s readers for the holiday season, if and however you celebrate it, in whatever form you prefer to do so. I came across this short film featuring Mog the cat, a character created by Judith Kerr. Mog is the star of a series of children’s books. This holiday season the British grocery chain Sainsbury’s produced this film featuring a CGI version of the cat. I thought it was pretty good.

You can also go behind the scenes and see the making of the film including the CGI effects, plus comments from Kerr and others involved in its creation. I am always fascinated by the creative process and like getting these windows into it.

Here in Taiwan, christmas is a non-event aside from attempts to commercialize it. It certainly isn’t a religious holiday, it’s strictly for kids. The few “xmas carols” you hear aren’t religious ones, and the snow-related carols sound ridiculous so no one plays them (25°C today). There are scant few xmas songs worth listening to anyway (The Pretenders’ “2000 Miles”, Motown recordings from the 1960s)

Taiwanese people try greeting me with “merry xmas” thinking I would appreciate it. Rather than shooting them down or saying “No thanks”, I respond with “Happy Constitution Day” (Dec. 25 1946) which surprises them and they appreciate a foreigner knowing about their history. It’s not a statutory holiday, but it’s still an important one and a much more worthwhile.

To all the evangelical Christians: Happy Holidays!

    To everyone else: Merry Christmas!

And best wishes to everyone for the coming New Year.

Priecīgus Ziemassvētkus! Literal translation; Merry Winter Celebration. I think Latvians were reluctant Christians.

Being an isolated American I had not heard of Sainsbury’s but as I watched the video it reminded me very much of the Christmas adverts put out by Publix, a large grocery store chain in our area. So I looked up Sainsbury and found that they too are a large grocery retailer. Makes me wonder if there is a connection.
