I made it! I got through the first day of classes without passing out or having my pants fall down! There are a few things I have to work on, though.
- No one wanted to talk. I had multiple questions for them and invited them to express their ideas, and as usual, they were reluctant. They were probably afraid of my fierce attitude. After I tore the tape off their mouths and managed to refrain from thrusting my fingers into their eye sockets and ripping out their skull and vertebral column, they started warming up and I got some responsiveness out of them. There is a lot of promise there and I think I’ll get them contributing more soon. Or, you know, eye sockets, skulls, vertebral columns, etc.
- I think most of them failed to read the paper I’d assigned in the syllabus! That fact may have accounted for their fear of speaking up, beyond just shyness. I gave them an incentive to look it over, though: I told them I know where I’m going to get a lot of questions for the quiz that they’ll get on Friday, which is even better than skull ripping at getting students to do the reading.
I did have a little problem I had last year — my voice starts to give out on me before the class is over. I managed to muscle through it and make my voice heard. I have to resume a habit I started last semester — having a cup of hot tea before class.

The photo reminds me of a sexist photo on reddit. It was a Christmas photo with the caption “Silent Night” but all the wife and daughter have tape over their mouths.
Having some hot tea in a travel mug might be handy for warming and lubrication a you go. But I pretty much take a warm drink everywhere (as one of the medications I take dries up the mucus membranes) so I’m immune to whether this would be suitable behaviour or not.
It may also help to get a little wearable microphone and feed your voice into the classroom’s speakers. That way you wouldn’t need to project as much.
My habit is to have a cup of hot tea before doing anything. And then afterwards. And often during.
I should have bought shares in Twinings.
I find it difficult to fathom how these pur wee numpties have never had access to the interwebs.
Did they not “google” you before they signed-up for this class?
Heh. You’ve forgotten your youth, I reckon. Maybe 1% might do that, but whyever?
You go to Uni (oops, College) and then you see who is teaching what, after you picked your subjects.
I was one once. Dropout, of course. Compliance with bullshit is not my forte.
(‘la la la land’ for them)
If I’d had the Internets when I went to University, I would have googled everybody and everything.
I stayed the distance for a BA. And I’ll have you know I was a solid, straight C student.
@ Rich Woods : “My habit is to have a cup of hot tea before doing anything. And then afterwards. And often during.”
Same here too! I’m not properly awake until I’ve had at least a couple of cups.
@4: Ditto. During my recentish degree, I brought a full travel mug of tea to every class. And made another one before the next class. Now I have a large (~500ml) mug in the morning, another mid-afternoon, and another during evening TV.
Being able to speak is a valuable professional skill and ability. You need it for one more year.
I read that you have been teaching nursing students. Perhaps they can research you some ‘preserve your vocal cords’ or ‘speech therapy’ exercises. They’re likely not paying you much, but electronics are cheaper than they used to be. A microphone amp and speakers?

screaming in proper parade-ground fake german interrogator is probably doing it. try half-whispered serial killer. posting summer vacation pictures of them, through gun-sights, may also encourage them to speak.
