Wind turbines kill whales. Tidal power stations kill elephants. Solar arrays kill albatrosses. Only fossil fuels is 100% something or other. Alas, those buffoons in power don’t care about the truth nor do they care about women and girls in science.

Let’s hear it for the women and girls who are interested in science!

I’d like to see the most qualified persons doing the work; and the Discrimination, Inequity and Exclusion (DIE) preferences for rich white males need to end.

PZ, caring about women, science, inclusion, equity: while you may not be the largest target, you are putting yourself directly in the crosshairs of the dictates of the MUMP cult.
Of course, we are right there with you in those crosshairs, working for the same caring values that have been declared illegal and woke.

In my science career, I have had the privilege to work with many wonderful and brilliant women at all levels up and down the academic/research ladder. I never believed the men who claimed that women were just inherently inferior and couldn’t do science, because my experience was that my women colleagues could science the heck out of everything. And there were obvious structural factors that opposed and constrained women in science, not least of which was some men’s crappy attitudes. Shout out to all the women who persist in these fields! Everyone should work towards making science better, more equitable, and less toxic or hostile to women.

Some years ago I established a scholarship for women in chemistry through the foundation at my alma mater. We’ve granted about 18 scholarships and the endowment is now self-sustaining (unless the financial goofballs at the foundation do something idiotic). Last year I was talking with my foundation contact and he said the foundation, and university, was concerned about MAGA influencers in the legislature and were taking proactive steps to not become a target. So, we renamed the scholarship to, essentially, Doc Bill’s Scholarship for Chemistry, although, behind the scenes we are maintaining the contours of the spirit of the scholarship, i.e. women in chemistry.

I don’t recall if it is Bulma or Chi-Chi that is so good at creating time machines, Dragon Ball locators etc but it deserves a mention.

An all-girls school in Charleston, SC just had to cancel “Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day” because of a directive from the Army Corp of Engineers. Someone apparently thought this was too much of a DEI event that went against Agent Orange’s wishes.
The school had no choice in the matter. This is a highlight of the school year for many students there. I wonder how anyone can think the world is now a better place by preventing this?

As a Black woman with a biology degree, this scares the crap out of me . I’m putting this in my calendar as I need to celebrate it.
